Why Do People Buy Fake Designer Bags Or Fake Designer Anything?

I wish one of the mods would make a post that says:

Are you posting on this thread because--

1. I feel more signifcant when I diminish others.
2. I'm really not that passionate about this issue, I just want to sh*t stir.
3. My ego won't let me leave it alone.
4. I'm coming to reply someone who is lying about their answer on 1-3 and posting here.

If you answer "True" to any of the above, re-think before posting.

Hey, I thought page 14 had some insightful comments :p

:lolots: I bow to your wit, VL.

This would then be the shortest thread in the history of tPF.

thank you! I ve been getting a certain amount of hate mail actually for that post from open minded people who 'do not judge others'.

The most ludicrous one was someone who told me to stop spreading the 'urban myth' 'that the police would arrest anyone carrying a counterfeit bag. Just to clarify I never said that and is hard to believe anyone stupid enough to believe such a thing. The police have better things to do than go after the slightly overweight suburban housewife with the fake LV (or her teenage daughter carrying the really ugly 'faux' chanel) The police may be mildly interested in the street vendor who sells them. but in all likelihood not even that. They want to catch the 'big fish' - importers of fake goods, distributors etc. The woman with the fake birkin is practically a victim rather than a criminal as her greed has led her to pay over the odds for substandard goods. (yes substandard goods - when we buy counterfeit. we pay that little bit extra for the fake logo.)
As for me - well I am going to volunteer for the FASHION police. ;)French VOGUE in collaboration with Hermes and Chanel are putting together an elite squad of fashion police. Competition is fierce, they test you so we have to be able to spot a fake (moving target) from min 20 paces away. First offenders get a caution, second offenders have to attend a six week 'refine your fashion sense' course. Third offenders - well best not to go there...:graucho:

LOL!! Love your post! Don't you just love those folks who "don't judge"? ;) BTW...Don't be suprised if this thread ends here, since I am usually able to kill a thread with one post.

To those fussing about the thread continuing, bear in mind that not everyone has read back--just how it is--and further, people join in at different times depending on when they happen to find a thread or get interested in a subject.

This site itself is anti-fakes. So it's not particularly out of step for many members to weigh in strongly against the counterfeiting world, without having self-esteem issues, bullying, or stirring as their motivation.

I have friends that always put me down like i am a idiot that buy a bag for say 100 euro. Than they buy fake ****ty bags and shoes for 50 euro that breaks after a couple of weeks and buy new ****ty stuff.......so who spend most money in the end?

I almost hate bloggers girls here in sweden because they all are wearing fake designers bag and totally ruin them because you can not see the different in a fast check so this stupid fake bags are everywhere.

hmmm ludicrous and stupid? how about unable to read (one's own writing)? I quote verbatim " Apart from the purely visual disaster, it is a form of theft and your family who is in the law enforcement business should explain that to you (the carrier of fake)." Since you conveniently changed the subject of prosecution from user of fake goods (per your original post) to merchandisers, do I take it that you actually agreed with me, or you are unable to read your own post? xxxxxxx

x

Sucks to think I might have to suffer from consuming the same type of goods as someone like this... won't want my intelligence being questioned

YES!!

Now can someone have the LAST WORD??
like me...lol

How about doing something positive today?
Volunteer at women's and children's shelter
Volunteer at your local humane society (my fave!)
Visit a veteran's hospital.
visit a mental hospital/ drug/etoh treatment center
There are lots of lonely ppl out there

amen for being real :D

I don't judge because even the real bag isn't a big price tag to me. Would you fret over something you spend your 1-3 days discretionary income on?

I don't judge because most of real bag (perhaps with the exclusion of Hermes only) isn't a big price tag to me. Would you fret over something you spend your 1-2 days pay on?

I honestly could care less what bag a person carries. I cannot afford even the cheapest designer bags and that's okay with me for right now because I don't enjoy designer bags for the status association. I actually prefer not to have a designer label attached and just have a cute bag rather than be a walking monogram covered advertisement for that designer. I follow designer handbags for inspiration. I love to see the elements that other designers put into their bags and then buy no name bags and alter them so that they have a similar feel but with my own twist. I personally love bows and hardware, buckles and pockets and I love to draw color and element inspiration from what I see real designers do but also make each bag my own. I get way more compliments than my friends who spent 200 dollars on the same boring coach bag everyone else has, and I'm one of very few people who can say their bag is one of a kind!

:giggles:
Well, you've got me beat. I was already probably a size 8 by 9th grade. Sorry to be OT, but most people seem pretty sick of the topic anyway. :graucho:

14 lbs in two weeks is not safe ... I hope you have slowed down now. The safest weight loss is about 10 pounds a month...

(I didn't read the thread..like at all, just saw the title)

I don't know why people buy fakes. I see more fakes around here then real bags. Usually it's Coach. There is a Coach outlet here that has great sales and there is also dept stores that carry Coach. Usually at the outlet you can buy a nice bag for under $100 when they have a good sale. I've seen bags for as low as $60.

There is of course the infamous kiosk in the middle of the mall that sells plenty of Coach fakes. I'm not sure how much they cost but now I see so many people carrying them. I heard somewhere they were around $20.

Now I'm kind of rambling...and not really getting to my point...

I think there are people who are ignorant and don't know it's fake. For instance I'm a cashier. I see older women carrying fakes like they paid a lot for the bag and I truly think they think the bags are real. I also see girls who carry fake bags who flop them around like they're nothing and I think they know they're fake and don't care. I think some people buy fakes knowing they're fake because of the cheap prices when in reality, I've seen fakes go for as much as the real thing.

Honestly I HATE the look of fakes (I'm mostly talking about Coach, I'm not too good at authenticating other bags just on sight alone). I HATE the look of the material, I HATE the look of the sig pattern lining and I HATE the look of the hardware. IMO they look like cheap bags that will fall apart in 2 seconds if they are thrown down the wrong way. No offense to people who do own fakes, but when they are compared to the real thing, they really do look bad.
