WHY are the older leathers better? Sad yet true.....

I don't have any of the newer bags, so I shouldn't really give an opinion. But maybe unfairly, one of the reasons I haven't bought a newer bag....

I do have a couple of lambskin jackets, and though they may be of thinner leather, they mark and stain very easily. This has not been a problem with my old Bal goats. They look delicate, but are very tough.

I am new to Bal and I am a stickler about the condition of my bags so all my Bals are brand new 08 onwards. I had never touched leathers pre-08. Recently, I visited a consignment store where they had 07 SGH Briefs (Tomato and Mogano) and I was so gobsmacked at the difference in leather. So thick and super amazing. I was carrying my 09 Charbon SGH Day and it paled so much in comparison - thinner and dryer. So I can only imagine what pre-07 leathers would be like if they are reportedly better. It has really opened my eyes that I've decided to let go of two of my 08 and 09 and patiently wait for pre-08 leathers. This from someone who could only carry brand new bags!

I own a 05 sky blue city and a 06 winter white city and the 06 one actually is a lot softer, thicker and almost like silk to the touch.

But I agree, it's totally different to my 09 Courier, which I still love though. :yahoo:

I have a 06 blueberry on the way now and I'm very curious what that one feels like.

I'm new to Bal and was thinking about getting my first Bal - a black or anthracite city. I have been wondering about the leathers too. I usually hang out in the Chanel forum and there are debates about the type of leather they're using now compared to early 2000's and even the 80's.

I think it's a general thing though - as these bags are becoming more common they have to mass produce them in a way that makes it more cost-effective (or profitable)

After reading this thread, I think I might wait to buy a secondhand bag too. I'm usually one for buying them new but because of the economic climate I've had to look elsewhere. Plus, I quite like the idea of a bag that has a story before me...

If anyone could shed light on vintage shops in London that would be great. I'd love to feel some of the older Bal bags to get a good idea of this amazing leather from back in the old days

Aaah beaux, it's sad isn't it? The bags from 2001 up until spring 2005 were just different. I have had plenty older bags and plenty fall 2005 to now bags and I just always seem to sell my newer bags because after the thrill of the new bag wears off these bags can't seem to make me fall in love with them.
The only thing that makes me still buy newer bags, even agneau is the better selection of the styles. I love the Oval, PT and the post-2007 longer handles of the Work, so I keep buying new bags, but I'm always on the lookout for the trusted oldies

so true...which is why I have lost interest for the new generation of bal bags. I would rather buy the older bags, cause like you said the leather from 01-spring 05, was completely different..

I fear that it's taken me over. I'm even thinking of tracking down a early black city - just because it's my favorite bag and if it is better (and I know it is) then maybe I should track one down........

I dunno...I've owned old and new bbags ( year 2005 to year 2009). All seasons/years and material (agneau and Chevre) have duds. For that reason, I buy Bbags only after checking it irl.

Some year 2008/2009 purse can hold up to oldER bbags I reckon, just my humble opinion. Although leatherdoesn't feel like butter anymore.

The prices for the new bags just don't justify the increase. If we are buying leathers that are not as special as the pre-08 bags, why the price increase. That is my biggest beef or are we just Sheeple?! Or maybe I should say "It gets my Goat!" :roflmfao:

You definitely should beaux! My two 04's have the most buttery, silky soft leather ever - probably just like your Marron
