WHY are the older leathers better? Sad yet true.....

The funny thing is that if they still made bags with leather like the 04 leather I would probably buy 5 times the amount of bags *new* from the store.

^^^me too!
i am new to bal, so all my oldies are pre-owned- BUT the 08`s to present do not seem as special as those from 07 and before.
the color, the feel- i would really rather have an older kind of faded bag in ok shape , than a brand new one, no question about it!

Aaah beaux, it's sad isn't it? The bags from 2001 up until spring 2005 were just different. I have had plenty older bags and plenty fall 2005 to now bags and I just always seem to sell my newer bags because after the thrill of the new bag wears off these bags can't seem to make me fall in love with them.
The only thing that makes me still buy newer bags, even agneau is the better selection of the styles. I love the Oval, PT and the post-2007 longer handles of the Work, so I keep buying new bags, but I'm always on the lookout for the trusted oldies

^^It is sad. If they still made bags like the older ones I'd buy a LOT more, so I guess that's good!

Sadly I like some of the newer styles too, the courier, part time, shopper and yes, the longer handles are useful to tall people like me. So I'm finding that I have quite a few 06 bags, maybe not as nice as s/s 05 and earlier but better than many later bags.

I can't see things changing for the better again either, sadly. It's not just the patchy quality of the leather, it's all the qc issues too.

I haven't read all the posts but the answer seems simple concerning chevre, no 2 goats are going to be exact (unless they were cloned). In the finishing process of the leather perhaps they did a step or two more in the early days of production that they figured they could do without as they learned shortcuts!! Makes sense! My question is are goats more expensive than lamb? Why did they change?

I really don't know why they did (well...the answer should be obvious...more profit!) but I can't find a reason to buy a new bag.
I just bought a 09 bag for a friend and I'm looking forward to receive it, to touch it, but I already know it won't be comparable.
It's not an opinion: older leather was obviously BETTER. It's a fact. Beaux mentioned that dreamy 04 marron leather, but each oldies I've been able to touch tells me it's totally different from the most recent bags. Even the color saturation after so many years...my beloved 07 mogano work has lighter color where the leather has been more stretched...with the oldies you couldn't notice it!
So, if I'll be able to afford them, I'll keep buying oldies, without any doubt.
As for Balenciaga...well, I would buy each season if the quality was better (so more profit for them), but these mass produced bags don't interest me.

SOme of the '06 leathers are just as good as '05. I have a '06 black first with soft and smooth leather just like a RT twiggy I once had. On the other hand, my '06 ink has a more dry leather and not as silky smooth and soft _ but I adore the color so I put up with it!

I would like to know if the 06 leather is as good as the 05 ? Thanks for your help ....

I only have a 05 white WE and the leather is so amazingly different from the 07 and 08 bags that I own.
Even though its all yellowed and dirty but the leather is so soft, smooth and puddly, even my friends who are not Bal-educated can tell the difference.

I can only tell you about my little collection... an 05 BG Twiggy (nice, silky but gets a little bit dry), an 06 Rouge Vif First (softest, most saturated colour) and an 08 Black Giant Day. The black, IMO, is the best leather ever. Perfect.

I have some 06 and 07 bags and the leather on them are so smooth and soft like butter.

08 and 09 leathers feel "bumpy" I guess but a lot sturdier I reckon.

Hm, not sure. I have only 1 post 07 bag now and it certainly broke in faster than any other new bag I've ever owned. I've owned 4 08 bags and I found them less sturdy than the older bags. The leather might feel rough (not always though, sometimes it's very smooth) and thick but it seems to be more prone to stretching and IME the colour saturation isn't as good. Time will tell, I guess.
