While we're on the subject, another majorly creep-tastic bag

I know I'm a hypocrite--wouldn't carry a bag like that or wear fur, but I love my leather shoes and handbags and I eat meat. Can't explain it or reconcile it.

I agree with you 100%. I think I look at it this way...and maybe rationalize it to myself.....since I know I am being hypocritical in some sense. The animals that are raised for the fur industry are solely being raised for fur and just for status. It is not as if we need to wear fur to stay warm...not like people did at one time. The animals are treated in the most brutal of ways.....since they are not regulated like the meat industry. Many are caught in traps and left to starve to death or bite off their own legs to try to survive. Those that are "farmed" are raised in small filthy overcrowded cages and are then killed in the most horrible of ways in order to preserve the fur. For example, foxes are killed by anal electrocution. Just horrific! And how many animals have to be killed to make one coat....mink and chinchilla are very small animals.

I am not a vegetarian, but I do believe in the humane treatment of animals. I don't wear fur, eat veal, and try to buy products that haven't been tested on animals. I also try to buy cage-free eggs; and humanely raised meat and chicken.

I look at leather as a by-product of the meat industry; and maybe that is how I can rationalize it. That we are using the whole animal....not one bit is wasted. Not saying that an animal didn't lose it's life for the meat or leather we have. But at least he didn't give his life for some fur trim.

Work has been done to make sure that the animals (such as cows) are raised more humanely. Dr. Temple Grandin, a woman with autism, has done amazing work on the humane treatment of cattle. People eat meat to survive. Yes, we can also be vegetarians, too...but at what point do you draw the line. Medicine is tested on animals....etc. Animals are harmed in the growing of vegetation from the loss of natural habitats to accidents with machinery. I don't know what the right answer is.....

I know in France that they have been raising politically-correct rabbits....rabbits used for food and then the fur is used. I still won't wear fur, but I think that at least this is a step in the right direction.

Also, the fur industry knows no limits in order to obtain fur. Astrakan is made from the fur of aborted fetal lambs. Just horrifying! :crybaby: Many coats with fur trim are not labeled....and are actually from the fur of cats and dogs that have been clubbed to death. With fur, to me, there are just too many unknowns. I can't justify the killing of so many animals just for the beauty or status of a fur coat. I don't say that I am not a hypocrite....but just a decision I have chosen for myself. Everyone feels comfortable with different levels ....some people wear fur, some eat meat, other are vegetarian.....You just have to do what you feel comfortable with.....and that is what I try to do.

It upsets me to read about the fur industry....yet, I sometimes feel compelled to do so in order to become more aware of what takes place. Most people just see the beauty of a coat....and yes, some are amazingly beautiful like chinchilla......and don't really think about where it came from.

I hesitate to say this, again, but most leather is a by-product of the food industry (and would otherwise go to waste), whereas fur and most exotic skins aren't.

Also, the way in which the animals are killed for fur/exotics is invariably even more barbaric than the slaughter of farm animals (i.e. animals are often skinned alive).

So there are major differences.

Exactly! Very well written! I wrote my response before reading through all of the posts! So sad about them being skinned alive.....this is just making me sick! :crybaby:

Thank you for putting it into words so succinctly! Fur irritates me, it seems so unneccessary and pretentious somehow. My mother has two mink coats and she thinks she's the s**t when she wears them but to me she just looks silly, especially when she's wearing full-length fur and sporting a $40.00 bag.:yucky:

NYpersonalshopper and Chloehandbags-- your posts were GREAT!! You are so right when you talk about how animals die strictly just for the fur, where leather is the by product of the meat industry.

My heart goes out to all of the animals who suffer for humans.

I do not go as far as to say we should not eat animals. However, I do feel that we owe it to the animals to treat them humanely if they are being used for food. We owe them that much.

In fact, I was involved with an Arizona proposition called the "Humane Farm Act" that will regulate larges enclosures for veal calves, etc. It is a step in the right direction. I am praying that it will pass!

Thank you! :flowers: I thought you put your point really well, too, BTW.

I know, it still makes me sick to think about it.

My BF saw an undercover film of dogs and cats being skinned alive, so, unfortunately, there's no doubt that it happens.

Thank you so much. :flowers:

It does seem a little ridiculous to wear fur with an inexpensive bag! :shrugs:

Thank you, Couturegrl! :flowers:

I completely agree.

Well done to you for getting involved and changing things for the better! :flowers: :flowers: :flowers:

Sorry to hog the thread! :shame:

But I just thought I should clarify that my BF saw this undercover filming on a documentary, which was shown on a mainstream TV channel in the UK (he's pretty sure it was BBC 1, or BBC 2).

So it wasn't some sort of faked-up footage (I know some people are dubious about the activities of groups like PETA).
