I am going definitely going with the spohisticated emerald!

If it is a "high-quality" emerald cut and a nice sized solitaire...I would pick it hands down. The quality level makes the difference on this.

I just think it is classic elegance and simply beautiful. When you see a gorgeous emerald cut it can really capture you.

I like the halo, but I do think it is a bit played out right now. I also worry about each and every little stone set in that ring. If your friend uses her hands alot with children, housework, in the yard etc. she may stand a chance of really abusing this type of setting. I feel the other one can hold up more if she really uses her hands.

i guess i tend to go for things a bit more unique so i have to totally agree with you. and this is coming from a person that owns a cushion!

I do really like emerald cut stones but I do not like them as solitaires unless they are very large because they tend to look smaller than they really are. I love them as three stone rings I think they look very sleek and understated.

However Cushion in the Halo setting is my favorite I just love Halo's I feel in love with my Grandmothers Halo ring from the 40's and even though they are very popular now I still love them.

What is your friend upgrading from? Will she keep her original stone?

Nicely stated & I agree. Though I typically wouldn't choose an emerald-cut; a nice size, good cut stone does have a timeless elegance.

That halo will stave off shrinkage - her center stone will look HUGE! Does she like to stack bands? The solitaire will stack better, but the halo has more WOW-factor.

I'm a pricescoper and see halos online everyday and tend to think of them as mainstream, but to be honest, in real life I have only seen one woman actually wearing a halo e-ring. I suppose it depends on where she lives and what style rings are around her to know if the halo is too trendy for her or not. And while they are currently popular, it's actually a very classic look that you often see in antique rings. Halos have just made a comeback.

She should also note that micro-pave is very delicate and must be babied. I had a halo for a bit (HW repro) but traded it for a bezel setting because I just couldn't handle the constant worry over losing stones.
