Which Rolex?

Hi please could someone advise me. It’s my hubby’s 40th bday in November and I would love to buy him a Rolex. He’s a real watch fan and to receive a Rolex would be a complete treat for him. I am not sure which one to purchase as I know nothing about the types and styles available and the website does not show any prices. I cannot afford the most expensive styles of Rolex but I am not sure which styles are in the lowest price range. I have heard good things about the Submariner. Does anyone have this watch? Pics would be so helpful. I read that a new Submariner with a green dial is coming out in September which is reasonably priced. I would love any recommendations or explanations about which is the best style in the lower price range. An idea of his style is that he usually wears the Chronograph style or sporty style watches, he doesn’t wear anything too blingy but he likes something a little unusual and the dials do not have to be black, silver or gold. Thank you so much for your help

Sub sounds like a great choice for him. What a great bday gift! Have you tried Jomashop for prices and a few ideas. It's a good starting point. Also try the rolex forum. I can't post a link here but it's one of the top results in a google search.

OMG I'm on the exact same page as you! I'm looking at Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean's for my hubby - he is turning 40 in April and I want to surprise him with something really beautiful. Good luck with your rolex hunt! If anyone has any online Omega tips I'm all ears!!!

Submariner sounds like it would be the best fit, since he likes sporty styles. I'd also look at the Explorer II. Those models will run you about 5-6K. Definitely shop around to get the best pricing.

Post pics of watches he does own. That way we can give opinions on watches that he likes. :)

A Sub is nice but if he likes a sleeker look but sporty look, perhaps a Daytona?

Rolex Milgauss is nice too. Sporty and a little unique (it has a lightening bold shape "arms" - brain fart on what it's called!). It's not bad in terms of pricing too! Not sure if this is a "real" Rolex pictured, but Milgauss looks like this.

Thank you so much for your replies. At present he has a Breitling Chronograph with a rubber strap (sporty style), he also has a Maurice Lacroix open heart watch, 2 Technomarines, a Rado with rubber strap (again sporty style), a Guess watch and I believe he also has a Vacherin Constantine which is a skeleton style watch (where you can see all the inside workings). Is the Submariner in the lowest price ranges of Rolex? Does anyone know if the price varies according to the different colours on the dials, for example would a blue dial be cheaper than a green dial or vice versa. Thanks for advising me to shop around, I assumed that the price would be fixed at all stores.

Surfergirljen - good luck with your search also. Hope you find his dream watch :smile1:

Lowest I believe is the Air King (unisex), however those are a tad small (34mm) for men.

Check out Jomashop.com - they sell authentic Rolex and I believe is a sponsor on TPF. They sell grey market Rolexes which I believe means they buy Rolexes from Authorized Dealers at a discounted price so ADs can sustain their purchasing number with the actual Rolex company. The goal is not to hold pricey inventory for too long, and grey market vendors help with that.

However, this means that your warranty paperwork WON'T be stamped with an AD's information so you'll only get the grey market vendor's warranty (usually 2 years).

New Submariner 40mm in GREEN bezel and dial. Saw it in a magazine just a few days ago. It's really unique.

No, Submariner is not the lowest range. I think Oyster Perpetual (no date) is.

^ Oyster is probably the entry level. However, Submariner in the stainless steel is probably considered entry level for the sport style of watch (e.g. rotating bezel).

I have a no date submariner - love this watch and the price is not bad ! I purchased mine online and I didn't have any problem taking it to Rolex for a minor time adjustment and also to break a link on the bracelet - when I called the service centre, they even advised that I didn't have to bring a warranty card !

All my watches are stainless or white gold. Looking for a different watch so going to all gold. Can't decide between the 36mm president with white face or 40mm Daytona with mop. Love the larger watches on ladies now. I thought I wanted the pres but seeing all these celebs with the Daytona makes me reconsider.
Both look great on my wrist which make decision harder.
Which would you choose and why..
