Hi everyone, just wondering which style and color do you think is timeless? I want to invest in a bag that I can carry through the next 5-10 years. Lol I have bags and colors that looked so dated. I feel that I wasted $$$ so I really want a timeless piece on my next purchase.

I agree, a neutral color in Selma or jet set.

But I'm not the type of person to keep things for 10 years. My style changes so much haha. The only bags I will not sell for sure are my Balenciaga black city which I got in 2007 and my Chanel Diamond Stitch Tote just cuz that was the first Chanel I bought myself, back in 2011.

I've been rotating my MK bags all the time since my taste and style and needs change. I don't even have a black MK anymore when I thought that used to be necessary. I also got tired of my dark dune Selma but now want a Selma in a fun color.

I think the Sutton. But ironically MK is retiring the style. It is classic and understated, not trendy. I do tend to go for trendy bags and it puts me in the position of having a lot of "dated" bags also. I did just buy a Sutton in Luggage. I can never seem to do black, beige, or navy bags so this is as neutral as I go :) MK does have some nice grey colors such as Pearl Grey, Elephant, Steel Grey and Heather.

You sound so much like me. I cannot own a black bag unless it has some sort of embellishment and even then usually end up selling it. Recently sold a black grommet Selma. I got on the Dark Dune bandwagon as this is so popular on TPF but it just did not work for me. Pink is my neutral!!

Get something in black, grey, or brown/taupe. You can't go wrong with a Selma, Sutton, or Hamilton, either. Just choose based on your personal taste, wardrobe, and bag style preferences.

I honestly don't consider any of the saffiano bags to be timeless. I think your best option would be one of the soft leather shoulder bags. Preferably without a lot of extra hardware. Those are the bags that I've seen my entire life that never look dated....[emoji3]

I think MK is generally trendy, but they do appear to me to have some classic shapes and designs. I love MK Hamiltons and think that down the years they will still look classy and polished. I think the sutton is also a good bet, especially from day to night and not as heavy as saffiano hamiltons.

I think any bag in a classic black, luggage or dark dune.

For me its more about the color than the shape. I LOVE neutrals for the simple fact they go with just anything I decide to wear that day. I buy them and just *feel* like I will get so much more use out of them than I would a coral or purple bag. They are never limited to a season or specific outfit :D Which in my eyes makes them classic.

But Im just like alot of the others, my taste changes too often to have one bag for 5-10 years. I'm not sure I could pick one bag that I have ever seen and honestly say I would carry it for that long. ;)

My heart is pretty fickle when it comes to purses.

And I definitely do like the looks of the trendy colors... I've purchased (and sold) a few different ones. They are short lived with me because they sit on my shelf more than they get carried and that drives me nuts!

The bright colored accessories seem to work better for me. They are cheaper, you still get the pop of color each day, you don't have to worry about matching them with anything.

Also maybe you settle for a bag that is in your pre-set monetary limit instead of which bag you really had your heart set on. NOT to say having that limit is bad at all, because only spending what I deem appropriate on a bag is HUGE when I purchase also, spending too much makes me feel so different about the bag and I end up feeling guilty. But maybe that's why you might feel like you wasted money and are not happy with the purchases. You got a wonderful deal but you still do not have what you actually wanted or what you find useful. :shucks: I've been through this more times that I can count.

For me its all about finding the balance of what I'm okay spending and what I am going to be happy with and get the most use of. I am willing to spend a tad more for items (while still staying within my budget) I know I will use daily and only buy the colored most trendy items on clearance knowing I will use them a short time and then get rid of them. I, like everyone else, LOVE getting a deal but it doesn't end up being a good deal if I don't use the item. ;)

I agree with the others. I think what makes something timeless is more color rather than shape. I always gravitate toward colors, but I always, always, ALWAYS end up selling the more crazier ones I've purchased within the year. For example, I bought tile blue last summer, which was a popular shade, but I look at it now and even though that's my absolute favorite color, I feel like it was "so yesterday". I know there will be new trendy colors out this summer and I know I'll want to carry those instead. I've bought and sold so many colored bags that I seriously had to sit down and reconsider whether these bags were worth it or not. They weren't. I was losing money. I've since made it a priority to invest in a few neutrals. I feel like black or white is so boring, but I have found that I actually love carrying them. It's nice to not worry about things matching and I feel less guilty about buying them because I know I'll be able to wear them much longer without tiring of the colors. I know I'll never sell those bags. So go for a black, brown or even a gray bag. You will definitely get most use out of those colors even though they're not as exciting!
