I am taking a mental inventory of my handbags, and I can't believe that I own only one black bag, one off-white bag, and the rest are brown!! So in my little world, brown is the way to go. I love brown, and 1/2 of my handbag collection consists of LV Monogram bags. The only black bag I own is my Mulberry Emmy. Geez, I need to go shopping. . . .
Alatrop is right. Black can be a harsh color, and can be quite aging for those of us over 30 or so. Don't throw things at me, but a very successful make-up artist (she's done celebs and such) told me that black is entirely too harsh a color for most women to wear successfully. Chocolate brown tends to be much more flattering. I think I agree with her for myself and as a result have been gravitating towards more brown bags and drifting away from black.
Yeah it really depends on your wardrobe. In my opinion every girl needs a good black and brown bag to switch back and forth from depending on the outfit.
Though black is my favorite color for handbags and one of my favorite shades for clothes, I must say that my dark chocolate brown bags are much more versatile. I learned this while traveling...On one trip, I accidentally brought only one bag which happened to be a dark chocolate brown Dior. Though I had a ton of black clothes with me, I also had some other lighter colored clothing that I had planned to wear for specific events. At that point, I was so thankful that I ended up bringing my dark choco bag rather than a black. The black would have been too harsh with a lot of the lighter, softer feminine colors that I wanted to wear, whereas the dark brown was versatile enough to look chic with my black outfits yet soft enough for my lighter ones.
Its just something about that shade of dark brown that really does it for me since it still looks rich enough to be elegant and dressy. I still adore my black bags (my absolute favorite is my black lambskin Lady Dior) but get a lot more use out of my dark choco bags.
Sorry for the rambling...hope that helps a little!
