Ever notice how an influencer will say they only use La Mer skincare and then all of a sudden claim Olay is their favorite when they’re sponsoring a post?

Or an influencer only wears Gucci, Bottega, and higher end brands but then says she loves Amazon fashion for the $$$$?

I don’t think this needs to be an Instagrammer-bashing thread but who do you think is sincere in their recommendations?

I really like Arielle Lorre’s feed a lot. I’m pretty sure she chooses her fashion items herself (and if she makes affiliate $ who cares) and I think it’s cool she’s working on a clean eating desserts cookbook.

I need to have Vlad promote this section, I do think a lot of members would have thoughts and this is a great topic/thread.

It's really hard to navigate this realm to decide what someone actually uses and likes versus what they're paid to use. Plus, I see the same thing as you - switching product and singing praises from one day to the next. I am unsure why brands continue to work with some of these influencers, it seems so disingenuous.

This is good and would be so helpful to us, please develop this thread.
Skincare:
‘Misseffortlesslychic’. Found her when researching Westman Altelier. She’s grumpy, no bullish!t on youtube and I trust her opinion. She seems somewhat knowledgeable about chemistry.
Another is ‘LabMuffin’, although too many Australian brands that I’ve never heard of/won’t use due to lack of thereof where I live.
I don’t trust any clothes promoting influencers but wouldn’t mind being proven wrong. ;)

I am on the fence about contributing to this topic. I am going to lurk for a while. I just don't see anyone who is paid to endorse a product make me change my mind on something that I would want to try for myself or follow. I do see the catch term used on other sites, though....maybe it is the next big thing to give credit to people whose names are out there to do their job. Maybe I am looking at this all wrong, but that is how I feel and maybe I can become influenced.:smile::biggrin:

I’ve subscribed to a couple of entertaining YouTubers, but I’ve only watched a few videos so far and am new to influencers on that particular platform (if the Youtube app is ever open, 90% of the time it’s because my little noodle is watching Mother Goose Club or Oddbods), so I’ll check back in when I’ve formed an at least moderately informed opinion. I used to follow some influencers, but weirdly they all started having babies in rapid succession, so I peaced out. I have nothing against babies (I had one of my own three years ago!), but it’s not the kind of content I’m looking for. They all became lifestyle bloggers droning on about their birth stories and breast feeding journeys and “how such-and-such professional interior designer gifted me a bazillion dollar nursery, swipe up!”, and the comments on their posts went from clothes and makeup to “my little jimmy is teething so badly, do you have any advice?” and “omg are Honest Company diapers really made from radioactive, non-organic baby-killing chemicals?” I understand that influencer offspring are content generators and sponsor magnets, so it is what it is. No hard feelings. In any case, I’m just a stowaway here hoping to pick up some intel on some interesting influencers that are worth following who aren’t currently defined by their fecundity.

I think any of the “big influencers” will be influenced themselves by the $. I just take everything with a grain of salt, and am extremely vigilant about making my own informed decisions.

Having said that, I find I really like a fairly new/smaller channel- “The Geek is Chic”. Evelyn, the creator, works in fashion, and enjoys luxury/designer- but with the caveat of making considered decisions based on budget as well as being conscious of environment/consumerism.

Her entire ethos appeals to me. Not to mention, I really enjoy her taste. I don’t think she’s worked with any companies yet, so her content seems pure at this point.

Thanks for suggesting her - I just subscribed and will enjoy binge watching her videos.

Thank you for this suggestion! I find smaller YT channels to be better in lots of ways than most of the big ones. Only watched two of her videos so far, but will definitely watch some more.

I know EXACTLY who inspired this example lol :happydance:

This is such a great thread!!

I personally love Audrey A La Mode's suggestions and she seems like a really down to earth gal to me. Also, her channel doesn't really promote brands or products. She's more about reusing what you have and is general in her descriptions (ex. cashmere turtleneck, vintage black ankle boots).

I also enjoyed Emma Hill's channel because she also doesn't work a lot with brands and when she does it's with brands that she has been raving about. I've even tried a couple of her recommendations (jewelry and coats) and have been loving them. But recently she has been doing a house reno so I haven't seen much of her recent videos.

"Influencers" are paid to promote products, that very fact means they can't be trusted to be honest. I don't trust or follow anyone. You can't even trust written reviews anymore because people get products in exchange for written reviews.:frown:
I feel the same way. The only one I follow is Rachel Parcell of Pink Peonies bc I think she is adorable. She’s basically getting paid to breathe at this point.
