Where would one buy a real tiara?

Mikimoto has some lovely tiaras with pearls, diamonds, and sapphires. When I was in the NYC 5th Ave boutique in 2003, they took one out of the safe and let me try it on.

The problem is, there are so few places where one can wear a tiara nowadays! :lolots:

Isn't Mikimoto on the rather very expensive side?

^^I think any completely real tiara is going to be really expensive. You're talking about a lot of metal and gems, look how much smaller pieces like rings and even necklaces/bracelets can cost! Even some of the fake ones can go for over $500-1000, and they are just base metal and crystal.

For the amount you would wear something like this, I think it makes more sense to just buy a crystal headband. I have a few that are sort of tiara-like, I get the sparkle but since it doesn't stick up it's still acceptable for everyday.

lol.. there's no way I'd be able to afford a royalty-sized tiara dripping with quality diamonds, but i'm thinking something made in 14k wg with a few small diamonds or semi-precious gemstones at key points? Or maybe even in sterling....with pearls, topaz, garnet, or amethyst?

Bentley and Skinner in London often have tiaras for sale. You can see some of what they have on their website and can opt to also search for sold items to give you an idea of what items sell for.

A lot of tiaras can also be worn as a necklace when they are taken off the tiara bracket. You can see in these photos that Crown Princess Mary of Denmark has worn her tiara as both a tiara and a necklace.

Auction houses - fine jewels sales.

Most that were not convertable were broken up years ago for the stones/gld

Ring the auction houses anytime and tell them you want to be notified for registration if they get any in.

BTW while you're waiting for the 'real' thing I noticed Butler and Wilson do a fab range of costume models.

Kind of a random, silly question, but I was browsing thru the resurrected "Royalty & their jewelry" thread and I love the tiaras!

Any searches I've ever done on google just turn up bridal tiaras or charms, nothing for real tiaras of precious metals and gemstones.

I think it would be fun to have a real tiara... something sparkly & pretty to pull out on my birthday or other special occasion.

Is a tiara something one would have to custom order from a jeweler, or are there dedicated tiara makers out there that just don't advertise on the web? :p

Apart from the obvious auction houses, there are only two real jewelers that have a long history of offering tiaras from Royalty and Noble families. These are SJ Phillips in London and Mellerio in Paris.

Why get a regular modern tiara when you can buy one that was worn by a Queen or a Princess? :smile1:

Well, if you can wear it two ways, then whatever the cost is, it's kind of a bargain, no? :graucho:
