Frankly, I just pick it out and tell him "I want that for (fill in here next major holiday, birthday, etc.)".

He'd much rather agree than actually (god forbid) have to go shopping and choose something on his own.

This is what I did with my ex. He told me to tell him what I wanted so he would get it right.
