As a part of my neverending, lifelong quest to not be like anybody else, I prefer to buy pure, undiluted essential oils and mix and match two or three to blend my own fragrances from them. Right now I have sandalwood PEO, patchouli PEO, lavender PEO, rose PEO, and bergamot PEO. I also have a bunch of other single note fragrance/perfume oils that I mix in depending on my mood, like green tea, jasmine, orange, lemon, vanilla, cucumber, freesia, sweet pea, and lily. I buy them concentrated, so a little bit goes a long, long way. Pure rose essenial oil is incredibly expensive, but as rose is my favorite scent it's totally worth it.
I do wear common, mainstream fragrance, too, though...my favorite is Rose Petals by Henri Bendel. My SECOND favorite is Miracle by Lancome; I ALWAYS have a bottle of each on hand.
For layering purposes, I have a bunch of different Bath and Body Works and Victoria's Secret sprays.
The Body Shop makes a wonderful line called "Invent Your Scent" for people like me who like to be different. I have a couple of the original ten-vial fragrance sets, as well as the more recent six-vial set, and I use those a lot, too. You can mix and match the different fragrances that come with each kit to make a scent that is personal to you. A splendid idea.
