What's a 3.5 and 4 ct diamond cost

I know people who own larger round diamonds in a good color and cut and SI or I clarity, they look beautiful, you're right it depends on the type of inclusions and cut but you need to look at many diamonds to get the right one and I would probably stay away from I's regardless.....I know a friend had gotten just shy of 3 carat for like $30,000 (think it was an E or F SI2) but I've never priced out larger than that.......

actually this was an SI1...

Here is an I color ( a grade under the H ) 3.17 ct Hearts on Fire brand

I've never been ashamed of wearing it:graucho:

(I) color is perfectly acceptable, the way gemologists look/grade for color is by placing the stone face down. In other words, anything in the near colorless range is quite difficult to see color in with the naked eye because we are looking at the face of the stones, not the backs.......

Thank you, all.....it's been a fun stone:smile1: The cut is so good on it, it that it faces up whiter (throws out more light return) than my E color graded Lazare Kaplan.

I would like to remount it sometime....sigh....but, that's another thread.

Isus - gorgeous ring!!!
The G, H, & I grades have a bit warmth to the stone. They are still a stone Tiffany would buy. And the Hearts of Fire is an ideal cut stone so I'm sure it shines like the dickens & probably shows as a G or F. Never mind what it cost you!
You wear that ring proudly, its a beauty! Your pooch is a cutie!

Exactly!

I have a VVS2 Emerald cut in I, I just fell in love with the look of the stone so it didn't matter to me that it was totally colorless.......as a matter of fact it's set in a Scott Kay setting that has F-G's for side stones and you would never notice the difference with the naked eye. Plus like I've said in either this thread or a similar one.....I've been told by gemologists that the way they grade color is by looking at the stones face down as it's very difficult to see color in the face of stones that are in the near colorless range.....

A lot of the time it's the cut that matters ... if the ring isn't cut well it won't sparkle. Although my ring is a J color, the clarity is VVS1 (and I never have seen the pinhole-sized flaw that's listed on the diamond chart) and it's cut very well. Since it's set in platinum, it doesn't look yellow or gross at all. In fact, my wedding band has stones that are G-H and you can't tell the difference in the colors next to my engagement ring.

lori, you're correct, cut is definitely king when it comes to the visual appearance.

As for color grading, there are a lot of ladies who prefer the warmer colored stones. Some seek out and buy fancy graded yellow diamonds. I don't have one but have seem many beautiful ones.

saligator, do you have a picture of your pretty HOF??

I'd love to remount mine. It's in a 6 prong Stuller bombe mount....very secure....like an armored car. But, it has no creativity to it....it's just a heavy....well, armored car:sad:

Isus, its in the SD box, so I don't. But when I get over there, I'll photograph it. (its uninsured at the moment, so its not out.) Its bezel mounted, so it keeps the light out. I'm thinking of getting it reset...
