Late to the thread but I've been reading up on the different Vache leathers. In the Vache Hunter thread, someone mentioned that Hunter is actually processed/finished? Is this true? How does it compare to Vache Naturelle? TIA!!!!
Hunter has a smooth finish, kind of like Box although not as shiny. I do not think it will patina the way VN does, but I only have one Hunter bag and it's only two years old. It's not a saddle leather, whereas VN is in that family.

I read through this thread and saw references to Peau Porc dating back to the 1920s. Is there any difference between “Pigskin” today and “the” Peau Porc? I understand it was brought back only recently, but I was surprised to see “Pigskin” described on the website as first appearing in 2018.

There are so many variations to vache natural I will call it semifinished leather .

Couple of years ago, while the Hermès Sèvres boutique was being refurbished, there was this sign in the temporary shop - sorry all in french - however to recap : what they call "peaux patrimoine" or heritage leather in english are :

- leather that are currently in production (so the list can change over time)
- can be devided in two lists :
--- those that have been produced for many years (Box, Barénia, Vache Naturelle, Peau de Porc)
--- those that are more recent (Barénia Faubourg, Tadelakt, Evercalf)

The main criteria for being on this list is that the leather will develop a patina over time, is made with a natural finish (or almost no finish at all) and will keep their strength over time...

This skin is known as "Peau (de) Porc" "Pigskin" or "Pecari", and all terms are used by Hermès SA but sometimes refers to different skins. Historically, Hermès produced bags and SLGs in Pecari (starting in the 20's) which they called Pigskin / Peau de Porc...it was discontinued sometimes in the late 90's / early 2000's -> this leather was obtained from the Tayassuidae family of animals (or Pecaris)

In 2018, Hermès resumed the production of Peau de Porc, except it's not made from the same animal anymore : they found a farm in Japan that raises a subfamily of Suidae (a type of Wild Boar if I understood correctly) that is very close to Pecari, so technically, yes, current pigskin has only been in production since 2018...

Differences beetween a 1984 "Pecari/Peau de Porc" leather (bottom) and 2018 Peau de Porc (top)

I much prefer the old PdP than the recent one. My Bolide in PdP from 1993.
