Sorry if this is rather long and detailed!

In high school, I used a soft canvas backpack that was marketing material for an Italian menswear line that my father was importing.

One day I passed by the local Louis Vuitton store while Christmas shopping and there was a sequinned Damier speedy on display which caught my eye. At the time I was still in school and found the price to be outrageous so I asked for a damier speedy 35 for Christmas that year, since it was similar but more reasonably priced than the limited edition.

The speedy sparked my love for handbags and I started saving money for something extra special. After saving my pennies and spending hours researching on TPF, I narrowed down my options between the Hermès Marwari and the Louis Vuitton Antheia Ixia.

After comparing both in their respective boutiques, I opted for the Ixia because it felt more refined than the Hermès despite stretching my budget past the cost of the Marwari. At the time I felt conflicted spending more on an LV than an Hermès because I had been partially indoctrinated by TPF that “H” was the lofty pinnacle of all handbag brands.

A few years later, I started university and while shopping for a birthday gift I found a Dolce&Gabbana bag which I fell in love with due to its thick leather and ruthenium hardware.

Fast forward several years and my brother was getting married and my father bought my mother a Dior clutch for the event, which got me interested in maybe getting a clutch.

While flipping through a Loewe purseblog feature, I came across several bags that interested me but I found to be a bit too expensive for my intended purposes. The bag in question was one of their handpainted T pouches. As though brought to me by fate, I received an email notification that Holt Renfrew would be having an online sale for Boxing Day. After a few clicks, I noticed the pouch in question was reduced by 80% and I immediately bought it.

Lastly, several months ago I realized that there was a gap in my collection for a small bag that could be used to carry essentials (keys, umbrella and wallet). This need arose due to my continued frustration of having to either leave my bag unattended at the salon while having my hair washed or placing it on the floor.

I began my research on TPF and then visited many different stores and perused instagram, which led me to the Chanel square WOC. The bag was transferred in for me but unfortunately it was too small for my needs.

In addition, I became paranoid of potential premature wear due to rubbing of the chain against the sides of the bag. My SA then tried to reassure me by showing me her personal WOC which only confirmed my fears as the leather was visibly worn from the chain.

I was back at square one and quite disappointed so I left the boutique only to come across a young woman with the most gorgeous brown classic flap in a jumbo size. I turned around and went back to the boutique to try on various sizes of classic flaps in order to narrow down the size and drop length that I desired.

Unfortunately the store didn’t have any of the configurations that I wanted so I went home to thoroughly browse the upcoming collections on Chanel’s iPhone app.

I found a sequined flap that would be part of a collection releasing in a couple of weeks so I called back my SA to know if her store would be carrying it. She informed me that all of Canada would only be receiving one in black but that she didn’t know which store would be receiving it.

In a panic, I called each of the Chanel stores in Canada and finally the Toronto flagship informed me that they would be the ones to receive it and that she would allow me to reserve it but that she couldn’t ship it to me until the collection launched.

Fast forward several weeks and I receive a phone call by a visibly annoyed SA that my transfer had been received. I happily headed down to the boutique to pick up my purchase only to be greeted by the most cold service I have ever experienced in a store. (Note to self don’t expect outstanding service from someone who isn’t getting any commission).

If you read all of this, you deserve a gold star and I hope you enjoyed the story.

Hmm...

In my high school years (90s), I mostly carried Nine West and Fossil. I carried whatever someone gave me for Christmas or birthdays. I wasn't really into bags then. I still wasn't into bags in undergraduate college. I just carried a tote with my sorority letters on it at school and whatever bag I got for Christmas/birthday.. I got a couple Coach bags (later 90s/early 2000s) during my grad school years. When I graduated, my grandmother bought me an LV Tambourine bag. I was totally not expecting it but she said I deserved it for graduating with honors. That started my love of bags. I bought an LV Mini Ribera bag a couple years later with my first bonus. I bought a couple more LVs over the years and then moved onto Balenciaga, Chloe, Bottega Veneta, Gucci, Dior, Fendi, etc. During this time I have also bought lower end, no name bags and mid-level bags (ex MK, Coach, Furla, Marc Jacobs). I buy what I like and that is not always high end  BTW, it was also my grandmother who started my love of fragrances. I probably enjoy my fragrance collection more then my bag collection if I am honest:biggrin:

My intro was to Coach back when I was in middle school (maybe around 6th or 7th grade). I used to “collect” Coach bags but that was pretty much about it in terms of designers. Didn’t think much else of bags until college, where I spotted my roommate’s Kate Spade bag and just instantly loved the style of it.

Still didn’t give bags too much of a thought until after graduating college and getting my first job. There, I saw a lot more bags and started appreciating brands more. I bought myself an LV Neverfull MM as a congratulatory gift after a few months of working and have since fell in love with bags!

(It’s worth noting that my family members would still give me bags occasionally between middle school and college graduation—however, I would rarely use them as I never truly appreciated purses at the time. Definitely a regret now, as a lot of them were quite beautiful now that I look back on it! Just too late since I’ve donated/handed down a lot of my stuff since then.)

My love for handbags started when I was about 20, and have had more than 100 in my lifetime. I started with Kenneth Cole, Donald J Pliner, Coach, Dooney, Cole Haan, Fracesco Biasia (etc.). Eventually I acquired a few premier bags (some pre-loved) like Dolce and Gabbana, Fendi, and Ferragamo. I still like those other brands, and Coach is actually my favorite.

In 2006 (or so), I wanted a Balenciaga bag so badly because of the Olsen twins and Nicole Richie.

Then, I came across the MJ Stam bags and wanted them, too.

I couldn't afford any of them.

In 2008, I was almost gifted a Speedy but it didn't push through. I think at this point, I discovered TPF too but hardly posted.

I forgot about these bags (and TPF) and just had a Fossil crossbody and some backpacks for school until last year when I came across the Shopbop sale and fell for the Marc Jacobs moto bag (with the belt, like a leather jacket - also my obsession). I then discovered Rebecca Minkoff which reminded me of Balenciaga and I rediscovered TPF and all hell broke loose.

For some reason, I went from thinking Fossil bags are expensive to now having seven Balenciaga bags and 4 Givenchy bags, two Marc Jacobs, and some Rebecca Minkoffs.

Now, my plan is to go backwards - let go of some of my Balenciaga, one Givenchy, and either buy a Chanel WOC, or just save the money.

All these and I still gravitate towards my Fossil crossbody the most.:nuts::nuts:

Bags were a nonissue when I was in high school and college. I had a regular backpack, a nylon tote, and a Coach purse. In 2013, I was gifted my first designer bag, a Chloe Marcie Crossbody. The quality was amazing and I used it exclusively for quite a few years. Sometime during this time, I got my first Longchamp Le Pliage.

About a year after I graduated from law school and started working, I saw a photo of a Chanel Classic Flap and it caught my eye. I knew I wanted one but probably won't have it for a long time. But just a few months later, my mom went on vacation to France. She was going to look at bags with her friend and asked me if I wanted her to purchase it for me. At this point, I had already paid off my student loans and was making really good money. I had no debt, no mortgage, no dependents, so I felt okay buying it. In fact, I asked her to get another one since she's already there. So my mom came home with the Chanel Classic Flap and the Chloe Drew.

That was May of last year, and later that year I bought the Gucci Soho Disco and the Givenchy Pandora. Earlier this year, I got the Givenchy Antigona for work. And today I just received my Saint Laurant College Bag.

My whole bag craze hit me out of nowhere and I definitely went a little crazy. But at least I use all of them regularly. I'm trying to limit myself to 2-3 a year now. Maybe even less.

2004-2006 (budget: never over $100): In high school, I worked at Bealls Outlet and carried mainly purses from there in the $25-$50 range. (Nine West, Etienne Aigner, etc.) One day, I found a Coach signature wristlet on sale for about $50 in the clearance section at Nordstrom. I was unsure of spending that much money. Shopping with my friend, she threw down the ultimate gauntlet: “If you don’t buy it, I’m going to.”

I’ve had it ever since then (something like 12-15 years) and only recently sold it because it did not fit my larger new iPhone.

2006-2010 (budget: never over $150): I grew up lower middle class in the suburbs, and thought Coach was the be-all, end-all of designer bags. (To be fair, Coach was more highly regarded during this time period). I bought a couple more Coach bags during this time: a signature shoulder bag from the Outlet and a patent leather Coach shoulder bag during this time period, both sub-$150 and both of which I also only recently sold.

2010-2015: This period encompasses being in law school, studying for the Bar exam, and my first year of being a lawyer (read: broke as a joke.). I don’t think I purchased any new bags during this period, with the sole exception of this Tignanello (a totally underrated brand, imo) tote for school, which I also recently sold on eBay. I used mostly the bags I had already acquired previously during this period, all of which were several years old at least.

2015-today: (budget: sub-$250, with 2 notable exceptions). My husband, the leather nerd, started raving about Saddleback and their female-driven sister company, Love41. He asked for a Saddleback item for a gift. I became obsessed with the feel of the high quality leather. Between that and embarking on my new career as an attorney, I figured I needed to look the part. I started with a Love41 tote bag for a sturdy work bag.

The rest, as they say, is history. Over the last few years, I have built up a great collection of sub-$250 handbags, (most were on sale, and retailed for much more!) which you can see here: https://forum.purseblog.com/threads...nd-practical-collection-by-diva_k3000.990749/

I have expanded to brands like Henri Bendel, Fossil, and Madewell, but Coach is still one of my go-to brands: It is still consistently the best quality at the price point. One of my current favorites is my Chelsea crossbody hobo.

With the amount of debt I have from law school and a fairly modest entry level income, I can’t see myself spending over $1,000 on a handbag anytime soon. My most recent acquisition, a bag from online leather artisan The Leather Shop, is one I lusted after for 6 months or so before finding a like-new secondhand one for sale in a Facebook leather group. At $490 retail ($400 like-new secondhand) it is by far one of the most expensive I have purchased.

The level of detail and craftsmanship is obvious. The bag is sturdy and substantial—it feels like a small saddle to the touch. The only other bag I own that I paid over $250 for is my briefcase, which came with a lifetime warranty and is a lifetime investment piece and something I will keep throughout my career.

I got my first designer bag around 2005 when my mum bought me a LC LP Cabas. After that, I started shifting from the cheapest possible nylon bags towards better quality. I got into gym bags by Nike and Puma, plus Guess started to make its way into my life. In 2006, I got a custom LC LP.

In 2011 I got my first Mulberry, an Antony, which made another huge shift into my bag habits; I realised what I was paying for and why. Pleather and low quality started to feel very unappealing to me and slowly but surely I started buying more and more designer; Lonchamp, Lumi, DKNY, Ril's, Mulberry. I made a few mistakes, some of them expensive, and bought a lot without giving much thought to what my whole collection was about.

Now I'm on the second year of curating my collection more into the size and shape I want it to be; I know what I like and need and what won't get used no matter how much I like it.
My style has gone pretty simple and muted and my tolerance for visible branding has gone lower than ever. I enjoy understated and functional designs and fun colors.
The brand I nowadays love the most is still LC, and if I'm going to get something more high end it's most likely going to be a LC Madeleine.
Since Mulberry has become a brand that no longer sparks any love or other emotion in my heart, I'm thinking about selling my M bags. Even the Alexa I so much loved.

Since moving in with le BF I've had my bags in storage for a couple of months and with very little trauma - I've learned that I don't really need much to be happy. TBH, I could probably sell all but 8 bags and 5 SLGs and I'd be totally fine. Not going to, though!

Vintage Coach and Marc Jacobs in the early 2000.
I abandon Coach in 2003 when they started to monogram everything.
I stick with MJ and MBMJ until 2008.
Then, I moved on to Balenciaga in 2009.
I started my fling with Chanel in 2010.
I never really abandon MJ and MBMJ all these years and still like Coach from time to time, but I never really go back to Balenciaga. I don't know why. I feel like I'm done with them. There are some models that I like and find interesting, but never enough to lure me back to the boutique or to buy.

I like Dior during Raf Simon's tenure there, but when he left, my heart also left the brand.

Now, it's mostly Chanel for me. And I like Massaccesi. Also, lately, Loewe.

Such a cool thread!
For me it progressed as my career did.

Teen: Billabong, Guess (90’s ah)

Freelance: Lancel / Coach / Small Prada items

20’s Executive: Moschino, Tory Burch, entry level Loewe.

20’s Manager: Ferragamo, Prada.

30’s Manager: Dior, Saint Laurent.

I only started lusting after certain bags in my mid 20’s. Never understood how one could justify so much on a sack to hold your items or how some cost more than a car (those days are gone!) [emoji23] I’m the mindful, research before I spend type so my progression was a slow decade from 400usd to 4000usd and to break the glass ceiling with a Dior took me a long time. But now I have, less iconic/trendy bags no longer interest me. A Chanel Coco Handle and Hermès Lindy are in my future but let me progress my career a little more [emoji77]
