It's all relative on the artist and the amount of work involved. Some designs are very time consuming- this one is a good example. The irony is that one artist may charge more or less depending on their skill, popularity etc.....
Bottom line, anything hand-crafted is just like purchasing a work of art. You're paying for the artist's time, skill, and workmanship AND for having something truly unique which at the end of the day, could be priceless?!
Contessa, I completely agree. when I first wrote the post I was still in shock of finally seeing the numbers and needed time digesting it. I think the same goes for my fiance. but his work was truly exquisite, and the best i've seen so far in terms of craftsmanship and the style is just so perfectly me... and we're in LA so there are lots of options...
i love old, ornate style things...including furniture (furnitures and sculptures are my favorites in museums...my mom used to sculpt).
swanky: oh yes, I should've said what do you think is the retail for the ring, not reasonable. 'reasonable' is so subjective and for an artist's work...well that's hard to determine. again, i think it was the shock that spoke for me

ame: yes...you know what actually, I was deathly scared he'd say something like 9k, since some of the other styles that I liked while looking elsewhere had cost that much.....shucks for expensive taste I suppose! I mean, I was thinking of a particular band for my fiance from philip also and I happen to find out that ring was initially designed by philip for himself when he was getting married and it retails for 6800 apparently.

overall, thanks so much for your input everyone. I think it does come down to the fact that this will be a one of a kind design hand made by a jeweler that I can trust for his skills that is nothing short of an art piece. it wish it to be an heirloom piece that I will pass onto my daughter if she wants it in the future
