What bag would you carry on a trip to Europe? Over $1,000 or under $200?

What bag would you take to Europe, or travelling in general?

  • I would take one of my $1000+ bags because I want to look my best and I am not afraid.

  • I would never take an expensive bag, I would buy something for $____ (insert price here).

  • I would take my expensive bag and if it got a little damaged, sell it on ebay for a $400 discount.

  • I would buy a bag over there!

While I would be tempted to take a fabulous bag, I wouldn't. Thieves are always quite honest that they target people with designer/high-end items, and sometimes a theft can happen so quickly it will seem like it was all a blur. Someone on the Rick Steves grafitti board said that someone ripped them off just as they stopped the car, and that if it hadn't been for the seatbelt with one passenger, more would have been taken than some bags in the back. It's also pretty routine for rental cars to be broken into.

What I would do instead is buy a nice bag toward the end of the trip and then use it on the way home if was practical to do so or just keep it in the carry on.

I totally agree with Annie. I've heard horror stories about bags being cut to get at the wallet inside, bags stolen right out of hands while walking on the street .... I really would not take a nice bag because the chance of you being robbed and it being ruined would be relatively high. My friend actually had her necklace ripped from her neck as she was crossing the street. On my visit to Italy, I confess I did not feel very safe, but maybe I stuck out because I couldn't speak the language?
