What 5 jewelry pieces should a girl in her 20s focus on acquiring?

Skip the watch. They are dated and unnecessary.

Pick a gold "color" you like. I'd suggest 18k yellow or white. Don't worry about it being branded. Just pick quality pieces

1) Diamond pendant - style choice yours.
2) Pearl necklace - it's surprising how often this oldie but goodie "works" with an outfit.
3) Beautiful stud earrings that can go from interviews to dates to funerals. Gold, diamond or pearl.
4) Gold Hoop earrings - these are fun, versatile and a little sexy without being trashy. Pick the size to flatter your face size & shape and your hair length.
5) A piece that is uniquely "you". I met a woman with an amazing spider brooch. I hate spiders. I hate brooches. But her piece was amazing! Get something that you absolutely love!

It cracks me up when I see lists including an engagement / wedding ring. That presumes a woman in her 20's should look for a husband. Yikes! Are we in 2015 or not? I love being married but, a husband and engagement ring aren't things a girl in her 20's should "focus on acquiring". I'd prefer said girl focus on getting advanced degrees, an amazing vocation and a robust life.

Wow! This is so insightful! I especially agree about the engagement ring part. :smile 1:

I think a girl in her 20s should start accumulating "forever" pieces rather than cheaper trendier pieces that don't last through the times. My list would be:

1. Diamond stud earrings
2. Pearl stud earrings
3. Pearl necklace
4. Diamond tennis bracelet or statement bracelet
5. Statement necklace

Here are mine...granted, I'm in my 20s and am still building my collection. :)

1. An everyday necklace, bonus points if it's sentimental or special to you. I wear a diamond solitaire on a gold chain -- a college graduation gift from my parents.

2. A right hand ring. Mine is a pearl and diamond ring my grandmother designed for me when she was working in fine jewelry. On special occasions I wear a deco sapphire and diamond ring that was originally my great great grandma's on the other side of my family, but it is quite delicate.

3. A nice watch. I've worn a Michael Kors watch for the past 5 years and am hoping to upgrade to a Cartier in the next few months.

4. An everyday bracelet. I wear a dainty Swarovski crystal bar suspended on a gold chain. I'm planning to upgrade to a Tiffany DBTY five diamond bracelet. I also wear a gold bangle from my grandmother on occasion.

5. Small diamond stud earrings. Mine are tiny diamonds that were my mother's when she was young.

I would also love a tennis bracelet, but I think that's for much farther down the road.

Who are these 20 somethings who can buy diamonds (plural: earrings, necklace, bracelet) and rolexes? [emoji4]

Ha, very true. I've never bought a diamond for myself; I've been lucky that my family has given them to me for sentimental occasions. My next purchase will be because I am fortunate enough to receive a bonus. This is certainly not reality for most 20-something's! I'm looking forward to having a Rolex in a few dozen years or so. Where I used to live 20-somethings were lucky if they had one piece of good jewellery at all

I think all 20-somethings are different. It may not be their style to even have/wear fine jewellery. If they have any interest, I would advise to save for one special but non-flashy piece they can wear everyday and another for special occasions.

I do think a pearl necklace looks very nice if their style is conservative, quirky or incorporate vintage (or 'vintage'

This is the time when a lot of people, if they weren't as a teen, are mostly financially independent for the first time in their lives. While taking care of bills or maybe student loans, what do you think the 20s age bracket should start focusing on and may be feasible at this time ?

I would say nice watch, not necessarily very expensive, but nice. A lot of people now don't use watch because they have cell phone. I don't get it :graucho: but to each its own.
I had a pearl necklace at that age, and I still have half of it, and made another necklace that I wear now.
A ring that you love. It is so funny, that several years later, I made something else out of the ring I had at that age, and now I wanted it back. I had medium size rose gold ring with rubies. Still love the design.
Bracelets, definitely, I would vote Pandora, love it. You can have as many as you want.
Diamond studs, as big as you can afford. Even tiny one are great.
Good luck!

As long as I remember myself, I loved pearls. My mom had pearl (faux) necklace from Finland. I loved the look of it. Many years later this necklace still looks good. I need to replace the pearls, and I would have it.
I got my first pearls in my 20-s. I have few strands now, quite a variety. No Mikimoto yet. Still dreaming about it.
I would say Boho style calls for pearls. For conservative styles you need a suit that restrict your movement. I doubt many young people go for it.
Quirky? It is an interesting definition...

On honeymoon my father bought my mother Majorcan pearls (which I now have though they need restringing). The island is famous for them. She was 23 at the time and uber modern.

Conservative is not the same a tailored. Conservative can mean preppy, casual or smart.

My mother gave me another (real) pearl necklace this year, it's short but the pearls are fairly large, I'm def a quirky dresser :p

1) Diamond or pearl studs
2) Pearl necklace
3) Something with your birthstone
4) Something with sentimental value, whether it's a family heirloom, a gift marking an important life event, or something that reminds you of a special person or place
5) A bunch of cheap trendy costume jewelry that's fun to play with

I really think it depends on your budget and what you like. But I have found that a nice pair of diamond studs is a reliable staple that goes with any outfit that I wear. When I look at all the fashion jewellery that I bought in my 20s that I no longer wear, I do think I would have been better off (in my wallet) had I just stuck with classic pieces since I get more wear out of them. :)

I'm currently in my 20's and my absolute must have jewelry pieces are:

1. White gold and diamond huggie earrings. I prefer these to diamond studs, as they don't hurt me ears. Mine were a 21st birthday gift.

2. A wear every day necklace. I don't have one of these at the moment as my tastes have changed from yellow to white gold, I am looking to get a white gold and diamond solitaire pendant later this year.

3. A good strand of pearls - this is for me mind you. I know plenty of 20 year olds who wouldn't be caught dead in sensible pearls, or simple don't see the appeal. I was lucky enough to inherit mine, when my mum realized she never wore it, after she was given them by my grandmother - who also never wore them. These were originally my great grandmothers, bought for her by her son during WW2 when he served in Japan. They have recently been restrung (as my great grandmother was very petite she wore it in a triple string, but now its a single opera length strand) to be more versatile. While not something most 20 years olds could afford I adore them.

4. A lovely classic ring - also something I don't own yet. Unfortunately I have very expensive tastes so my ideal ring is currently not in the budget. With an unlimited budget I would have an exact copy of my grandmothers ring made, which is a raised cluster ring set with diamonds around a Ceylon sapphire.

5. A beautiful watch - I'm lucky enough to own a Hermes Kelly lock watch, which is my absolute favorite and I truly believe it doubles as jewelry.

I think these 5 are good staples, for me at least, but of course every girl has got to have her stand out pieces which she only wears every now and then. :graucho:
