I guess I have to ask if you'd be willing to purchase 2nd hand or grey market? Because if you are, your options widen... checkout timezone for education on the styles of watches you might like... it's like tPF except watches! lol... plus, they have a sales corner....but as always, do your homework, ask lots of questions, and buy the seller not the watch!

 You guys are great! These are some excellent ideas!

Junken - I never thought about grey market/2nd hand, but it's definitely an idea ;) Do you know if websites like orolus and others are legit? I could probably find a list of reputable online sellers at timezone, eh?

Cola - I have been browsing the tourneau website for like an hour...very smart suggestion!

illi - I am looking at Michele's website...very nice looking watches. I have a (girl) friend who has one, and she loves it...so it's defintely a possibility.

Aqua - you are totally right...I don't know if I want to get a "very basic watch" from Cartier or H if I could get a better one from Michele or others...or just wait and save up more. Sadly I don't think the tank solo is quite what I'm looking for anyway (too thin/minimal). Thanks for the input, again!!

Leaving London tomorrow...have had a wonderful visit. I spent like an hour in uniqlo finding so many great deals...and tonight I saw a private viewing of an old 60s movie at the Disney Corp's London offices, in their little theatre. Very cool...

Thanks again, all...

^^^ There are lots of places that sell certified, pre-owned Rolexes - I wonder if you could find the same type of thing from other watch makers? Also, when I was watch shopping at Nordstrom the other day, the SA told us that Longines was the oldest Swiss watch maker (I think) and that many high end watch lines buy Longines parts. They sell Longines at Tourneau. You might check those - they had some really young but sophisticated looking ones at Nordstrom in the $2,000 range.

for a college age male, i'd say Tag...Cartier is classic, but Tag is sportier

i guess it all depends what you are looking for

college is such a casual environment, i think a Tag would look perfect
