Cross posting from the Making thread, this very interesting Volynka Sac a Depeches Light with Volynka detail on the hardware:
(It's a bit unfortunate that they didn't bother to brush off the bloom* which makes the bag look old, but maybe that's what they want to achieve.)
Compared to this other Volynka SaD Light that doesn't have the same hardware.
Also interesting to note that there are big, dark areas of Volynka enough to make a bag. Like I mentioned in the other thread, all the bags are getting the same lighting, and the SaD Light bag is made from a darker version of Volynka.
I thought it just occurred in patches, as can be seen on my Plume (left hand side of the front panel):
Speaking of which, I've also noticed that my Plume is so shiny that I wonder if this is already patina I'm seeing, which it has probably acquired in the 2 years it has been in storage, with SAs brushing the bag each time they show it to a customer.
This Bolide is not as shiny:

*bloom = fats that rise to the surface of the leather and crystallise, forming a white film. It's caused by the dubbin applied by the tannery during the finishing process of the leather.
From the tannery that made Volynka, J&FJ Baker:
"We have developed nearly 20 different dubbins each uniquely mastered to enhance the leather’s intended use... The dubbin feeds into the fibres to give the leather better durability, water resistance and a nice level finish. We do this by hand with a brush to ensure the dubbin is thoroughly worked in and evenly spread. Once this has been left to soak in for a week we have a finished product that is ready to be collected or sent to the customer. When the leather is ready to be used the white waxy coating will rub off whilst being worked on or can be buffed off with a soft bristled brush, such as would be used in shoe polishing."

In anticipation of the new Hermessence Violette Volynka which launches September 1st where I am. My fave Hermes colour with one of my favourite scent notes.
My Violine KP and DH's Volynka agenda which I was so excited to find at Harrod's. He says none of the Volynka bags suit him, so we may consider another Horizon project.

I have acquired two pieces from the 1786 Metta Catharina leather, and here they are in comparison to Volynka:
And as you may have noticed, my bag has gotten a bit shinier than when I first got it, and it’s only been a year. I think it’s more visible in this pic:
It has to be the brushing that I do.

understandable because they're in limited quantities. but according to the divers, there are still some rolls left under the sea. they just didn't get them because it has become too dangerous. in the future when we have safer and more sophisticated diving equipment (or maybe robots), we might be able to get the rest of them, and larger bags can be made

Oh you should. I have used my cardholder every day since I got it and it's absolutely pristine.
Let's hope Hermes gets over the lack of response at launch and releases new designs. The thing was the bags were huge, the large amount of leather was creating a very strong scent which not everyone likes as much as we do, and they were heavy. Some SAs also said the price was a bit high even for Hermes and they felt the scent was really off-putting to customers. Luckily Volynka is new and H can continue to work with the producers and order more if they want to. I bought my cardholder made from the Meta Catarina leather and the store owner knows the diver who retrieved the leather. I was told most of the remainder are in precarious locations in the wreck and it's actually dangerous to attempt reaching those. Have to say the old leather truly is amazing. The scent is much more mellowed of course and the texture is more refined than Volynka. It was a truly enjoyable and informative chat.
Frustrated bc I walked into Milan and this was sitting there Plume. I asked the SA to smell the Volnyka and she laughed bc she was surprised that I knew the name and the smell. Initially it seemed “available” but then she told me it was assigned… normally I take H with a grain of salt but I wonder how many people are vying for this exact bag. Disappointed beyond belief. I might go back when it’s Less crowded and see if I get a different response
