this plume, a Plume Fourre-Tout 40:

Btw, a bit of trivia: the Plume is one of the oldest Hermès bag designs. If I'm not mistaken, it appeared in during the 60's and was originally intended to hold blankets, like this one:

The handbag versions came in much later.
Many thanks!

My understanding is that the Plume handbag was launched in the 60s, inspired by old zipped blanket carriers from the early motorcar days. Legend has it that was first made for Catherine Deneuve but I have never found a pic of her carrying one so who knows… It has been in producction since the 60s which would make it one of the oldest Hermes classics.
Sorry for the OTT. I have a couple of Plumes and it is one of my fav H bags. It would look gorgeous in Volynka :P.

Try Bel Amis (men's) for leather

Volynka smells quite tarry (which I think must be within the recipe for the tanning process) rather than just leathery
Is it not similar to Birch Tar leather processing which started with a Russian army officer tarring his boots to make them waterproof. Is this true or just me remembering the romantic version of how Chanel Cuir de Russie is marketed?

Ah, well, there you go, could be. It would seem to make sense.

I distinctly remember smelling tar, and it was strong :faint:

I think I know where the mix-up started with wrongly attributing the original Plume as a travel bag in the 1960s. Sotheby's and spotted fashion has it wrongly written down on an auction listing. One of the problems with something that's written down incorrectly online to what seems like an infallible source, is it then spreads like wildfire. I saw a much older, larger version at the Leather Forever exhibition and also in old sketched adverts.

Looks like CD's is smaller than 32 actually. I have a 32 and a 28 and hers in these pics looks more like a 28 and an elan at that perhaps, but that may not be her first. I am pretty sure my SA said her first was a 32 but SAs get these things wrong too sometimes (and especially if they're trying to sell you a 32 LOL).

The Volynka is utterly must splendid and would last a lifetime.

Oooh, so happy to see this pic. I’d never seen Deneuve with a Plume. Looks definitely like a 28 (which has very 60s proportions).
Me I have stored a pic of what I believe is the original blanket zip case from the 20s/30s that served as inspiration.
Maybe all this should go to the Plume thread…

Yeah I remember seeing something that resembles a Plume in one of those old newspaper-y Hermès ads but I cannot find it anymore. I also doubted my memory if I indeed saw it.

I wish I was able to go to a Leather Forever exhibit when it was still on. *sigh*

Yup, exactly. A light leather case to carry our blankets on a picnic. I will supply the blankets and 1923 Bolide, now all we need is @allanrvj to secure his Volynka Plume and someone to volunteer as driver for the Bugatti and everyone on this thread can climb in (Isadora with that annoying scarf is not allowed on this trip).

I'll drive the Bugatti (having been a dancer, I will never wear a scarf in a convertible). By then I'll have convinced DH to buy the Volynka HAC. The champagne and glasses can go in there.
