I still love the Plume. Want want want! :D

I knew you would say that!! [emoji23]
I passed the store on Sunday but decided against going in as I had already spent over 2 hours there the previous weekend. Looking through the side windows, I did notice that they were displaying men’s bags on the ground floor and wondered why. Silly of me not to get in. I’m not mad about the appearance of that leather but would love to find out what that smell is all about...
@freddie: do you know how long the exhibition goes on for?

Thanks, love
I still love the Plume. Want want want!

The good thing about the Plume (compared with the HAC and the Bolide) as a travel bag is that it's not triangular (bigger at the bottom and tapers towards the top) so packs more economically all the way up. My 32 holds as much as a Bolide 35 (actually 37). Good for packing clothes ad this would make a gorgeous weekend or overnight bag. I have a travel Bolide (the 1923 shape) I use it for work or traveling from house to house, it's not actually that big inside although everything stays perfectly organised. The HAC does't have to be carried closed but a 50 is going to be too heavy for me.

If they're still there Friday or Sat I'll check them out.

I mentioned before that the smell is similar to Chanel's Cuir de Russie (after all, it's named after the leather), but recently I discovered that Le Labo's Patchouli 24 is closer in terms of the scent of Russia leather. The recent incarnation of Chanel's Cuir de Russie is quite soapy and has some grandmother's perfume notes which I don't like, while Le Labo's Patchouli really nailed the birch tar oil scent.

Also you tagged the wrong guy. It's @FreddieMac :)

I also learned about myself that I really like my bags closed, prolly because I was raised in a city with a lot of pickpockets. So HACs and Birkins don't really do it for me anymore. The Bolide is cute but I don't like that there is no 40 cm option. It's 35 then 45cm. They made a 40 cm once but only in Relax. What's up with that?! I don't want a slouchy Bolide! :D

Have you tried? OK, this is not the place to post really but you could totally rock a 45 Bolide if you wanted. I'm only 5.5.5' (every 0.5. counts :P) and medium build and have carried my Bolide 45 every day for the last fortnight.

So a Volynka exhibition is currently in London at the New Bond Street store!

They have all the pieces in the collection, all stored in their own little personal Perspex boxes with 'sniffer' tags to open up and inhale the oaky, woody goodness of this incredible leather. Items include the HAC 50, Plume 40, Bolide 45 and the A4 size Ulysse cover, with bonus brush!

Sadly I couldn't touch the leather and I'm still not 100% sold on the embossed appearance, but oh my is the scent something different.

PS sorry the pictures aren't amazing, quick snaps coupled with too much overhead lighting coupled with Perspex reflections!

Thanks so much for the pics FM :flowers:

You're totally welcome, I hope you have a chance to check them out later this week!

On to semi-off-topic Bolide related conversation, I had a chance to try out one of the baseball 1923's and was really pleasantly surprised at the size of the 45 - totally functional and because the base isn't quite as deep as the HAC's, less banging into leg issues! Yours looks gorgeous and totally in proportion to you!

I happen to own a complete “Russia Hide” I purchased back in approximately 2004 from someone who bought a group of full hides from Daniel Putnam Brown, (a.k.a. “Put” Brown who is a noted scholar in the field. Put, with his British partner had the rights to sell these hides in America. Divers retrieved these, approximately 100 ft. down, after discovering the shipwreck Metta Catharina, (which sunk when a massive gale hit, and it was anchored while “waiting out” a gale off of England in 1786 (enroute from St. Petersburg, Russia to Genoa.) I found the story absolutely fascinating , and purchased the hide ( which fyi is seemingly as supple, and smooth as the day it was prepared) land survived due to the fact that it was protected by the mud or silt it dropped into. It is preserved in “Birch Oil”, which has a wonderful "spice-like” almost hard to describe scent. I had acquired approximately 14 or so years ago at a time when one of the primary groups interested in owning the hides were museums and private collectors. Furniture on surviving inventories in America as early as 1650, describe seating furniture with the mention of "Russia Leather”. I also know of a number of exceedingly rare examples of 18th century furniture which still survive today. I only today searched and found that a number of the top fashion houses including Hermes are creating pieces using the leather. I would greatly appreciate knowing who would be the best contact to sell my hide for whatever the appropriate price is. I have just taken photos of it. If anyone has thoughts on this, I would greatly any help. I can post a photo of it as well.

you can contact Mme Elise Blouet-Ménard, as she might know of people interested in your leather:

She's the one who lead the research in recreating this leather today.

I have been wishing for over a year to be able to see this unique leather with the signature smoky birch tar oil scent. Today I was very lucky, got my large A4 Ulysses notebook that I will use for work and was also offered the 45cm boliden bag that was gorgeous, but felt too large for my frame and I hope it will find the perfect home, someone who can appreciate the special leather and story behind.

Major congrats on your new treasure! I have been asking all over my residence country for over a year, but nothing in sight. May ask how much the Ulysse was?

If there was someone who would truly appreciate this leather, it would be you. Congrats!

Thank you, I requested this leather, hoping to see it in any item, during summer in several boutiques. Most SAs had no clue what I was talking about and I had to explain and show them pictures and the Hermès story about volynka. The Ulysses was surprisingly inexpensive 1370£ and I had to make sure twice before I could believe it :) The SA said he would try to charge me more

If there was someone who would truly appreciate this leather, it would be you. Congrats!
Thank you dear periogirl, you know me and my passion for Hermès leathers. My Ulysses Volynka travels to Paris next to get the paper filler. I will enjoy seeing the SAs reactions when I take it out from the dustbag
