Hi! If you are not asked by the agent collecting the receipt, then the expectation is that you self declare to to the collecting agent before exiting Customs/immigration.
I researched it sometime ago. I think I ended up at US Fish and Wildlife as well as USCBP.
I even got an email from the US government saying I could bring back a croc handbag for personal use.
I did not bring one back at that time.
You declare WHEN you hand over the receipt. In my US home airport, they will then walk you over to the actual customs assessment area, but it depends on your airport layout.
Yes, Customs will ask for the CITES. For me it was one small croc clutch. I wasn't charged duty, but this was a couple years ago when it was less likely CBP would charge the full rate.
I came back from France 2 days ago to Dallas (DFW) and no one asked anything. I was never asked to declare anything at the global entry kiosk, just showed my passport, collected my checked bag, and where there used to be agents waiting to talk to you there was no one. This was my first overseas trip since 11/19 and I was shocked by this change. Oh well.
This happened to me at JFK a few weeks ago. It was SO WEIRD.
Same here, but after reading the posts here now I am nervous that I will get a notice in the mail!
The first $800 in value is duty free. The next $1000 is 3%. After that it’s 9%. You can combine duty allowances across family members.
I usually give them my receipts and let them figure it out. It always seems to be different depending on the mood of the officer so I just hand them over and go w/ the flow.
