Thank you Lori, that is very helpful since you have gone through a similar experience of deciding what to do with antique jewelry. This ring is similar to your great aunt's, where most of the interest/value is in the design itself. It's hard to say if I will "never" wear it, I suspect years down the road my 3 diamond love ring may not be my style (currently part boho, part romantic feminine and part edgy) as much as it is now, and I might go back to wearing more romantic jewelry, however I can always buy a more impactful antique ring in the future (or better yet, a tough modern ring in an antique style now that I know how hard I am on jewelry).

Just for reference, here's my great aunt's ring from 1915.

What a piece of history. I remember seeing that style while extensively searching for an antique diamond ring. It is really lovely.

Thank you. I cherish it. According to family lore, her husband was "a philanderer and a drunk" so she divorced him, which as you can imagine was complete taboo at the time. So I am proud to have that ring even though the marriage didn't work out because to me it signifies a very strong woman.

Absolutely. It would take a lot of guts for a woman at that time to leave her husband. You can be proud to have such a strong woman in your lineage.

Initially when I talked about enhancement bands, I was thinking something along these lines, a small but detailed diamond band on either side to add size and interest value. For example something like this:

I've done some more looking around, and found there is something called a "Ring Keeper", which could also be a nice option to make the ring more sturdy without changing the original antique band, as the ring keeper is made specifically to fit the ring and sits on either side:

I wonder if I could end up with a ring with a wider face, for example something with a similar footprint to these:

Mmhmm...that's what I was thinking. Have a keeper made that will give you a more elaborate effect. It seems like it would check all or most of your boxes, keeping the ring, but making it more to your current taste, without permanently altering the original.

I just emailed my jeweler to make a design appointment to see what we can come up with :)

I sometimes wait a little while to decide on these things...my tastes can also vary over time. Sometimes if the answer doesn’t come to me right away I know I’m trying to force a decision which usually backfires.
I have sometimes parked the decision intentionally and then reverted some months later to check my appetite to take action or otherwise.
Currently I have a Tiffany open circle platinum diamond necklace that has been given to me and it’s just not my style. I oscillate between feeling it’s criminal to remove diamonds and re-purpose them to thinking ‘perhaps one day?’....so - I’m not ready to commit either way and will just hang on to it until my vision is clear.

Just lastly - if you don’t LOVE the piece - don’t invest in it further...find something you truly love!

This is really good advice. I tend to be very hasty with my decisions as if how I feel now will be unchanged in the future. In reality, my tastes vacillate as you say. I think that is why I like variety so much. On the other hand some impulse purchases have become daily mainstays. It’s a good idea not to invest more money before sleeping on it for at least a month, so I will do that. I’m not sure why I have such an pressing itch to just take some action...

I am curious to see your necklace if you want to post a photo :)

I have a 1940s platinum ring I bought from goldadore at etsy! I love it! It really sparkle even more than my modern solitaire with perfect cut. Some people where surprised at me liking a ring worn by another person but I didnt care. I found comfort in owning a quality piece that was bought cheap but with better quality than those sold in chain malls. If I were you I would just have it repaired. The design is something that is not done anymore in modern times and I guess that is part of the appeal of an antique ring. Rings nowadays look all the same. Antique rings can be unique and the diamonds are the best. It was a time a diamond is a diamond regardless of the 4c's. Years ago, i didnt know of that clarity, cut etc. I was just more thta happy owning a diamond. Gone were the days people would appreciate a jewelry design by itself. Now its all brand names, what karat, how big the diamond is etc.
