Chanel's leather selection quality has definitely gone down. Same thing happened with my iridescent ivory rect mini. The top flap's leather is noticeably flatter than the rest of the bag. The quilts on the flap are not puffy at all. I was bothered in the store when I first saw it. The bottom piece of leather (underneath the flap) is much more puffy. I ended up taking the bag home and keeping it anyway, since it was one chance to get a super unicorn that had a tonne of people on the waitlist after me. After some time has passed, it doesn't bother me that much anymore as I would rather own this bag than having to source one from a personal shopper.

However, the same cannot be said for other less unicorn bags in my collection that were imperfect to begin with. As time passed, I ended up letting them go one by one. Each time I picked up one of these bags, the flaws from day 1 would jump out at me all over again. For the cost of these bags, they should all be perfect from the get-go.

In your case, it is an REV bag that will be made again. Since beige clair is a staple forever classic that would probably remain in your collection forever, I would absolutely try to exchange for a perfect one, instead of settling. If it bothers you enough now to question it, it might end up bothering you in the long run. If an exact exchange is not possible, I would return it. Yes, I say this despite the pending price increase! These bags are too expensive to settle. Don't forget that there will be a cost to sell it too should you change your mind and decide to let it go in the future (fees, consignment etc..) so the difference due to the price increase might end up breaking even.
Thank you for your response! You’ve made some great points.

Oh dear, I am not picky but this is very obvious. Or maybe I always look at the puffiness of the quilting first thing. Will you maybe want to ask your SA to try to find another one? Instead of returning?

It means this is a common problem for 30 series so maybe we won’t be lucky finding another bag without this problem from the same series. It’s worth considering if you want to pay 300$ more. In October 2019 the bag costed €4250 and now €5500, imagine adding 300 more
I didn’t know that this issue is that common on 30 series! This is definitely something to consider. I’ve reached out to my SA explaining the situation and requesting if there’s an option to exchange. I don’t expect perfection, but the quilts lining up and same type of leather/level of puffiness were one of the first things I noticed when I first opened the box. I just didn’t want to keep the bag and it still bothers me long-term. That would take away the ‘happy feeling’ of owning the bag and using it every time I look at it.

Such a bummer to have to go through this in the middle of a price increase. The whole process of exchanging/locating an in demand bag style to one without any issues is so unnecessary for us to go through. Been through it last year with one of my classics. If it were me, I would not keep that bag. It's way too much money to settle on something that noticeable even though Chanel loves using the "it's handmade" excuse. I agree with you, this one does seem more like two different leathers were used rather than craftsmanship...which is so odd! I have a beige clair on pre order and I'm crossing my fingers it's not a 30 series now (never knew that was an issue with them).

You’re absolutely right!
I think it is harder to tell the difference in photos vs. in person. Below is probably a better description comparing the difference in leather in the same bag.

I finally see it! You should definitely return it! It would bug me every time I pick up the bag. I am sorry that this happened to you. Chanel shouldn't even use two types of leather for 1 bag. I see this a lot with like other brands (like Kate Spade, Rebecca Minkoff). But with a Chanel, this is not acceptable. I hope you can exchange for another one. Let us know how it goes!

In my opinion, if you want all quilted are puffy, you should focus on the flap without the stitches on the edge of the front flap like mine (see the below pictures). Mine is also small, but without stitches on the edge, that’s why it’s all puffy.

Yes, I have a few without edge stitching and they are puffy! That’s a lovely bag! Which season is this pink? 20s, 21c or 19c?

Hi all,
I recently purchased a small beige clair classic flap over the phone last week. My lovely SA texted me ASAP when the shipment arrived at the boutique, so the bag is brand new. I’ve just received the bag today and noticed that the grain/texture of the bag is drastic enough that I’m considering of returning. It has taken me a long time to finally find this bag and the fact that there’ll be a price I crease in 2 days, so I’m a hesitant today return.

I actually have beige clair jumbo that I purchased a year ago that’s been sitting in the box (tags still on and everything). I haven’t used it at all because I realized that it’s too big for my body size and doesn’t fit my lifestyle. I’m planning to sell it to fund the small size.

The leather/grains on my jumbo is consistent all around, which kind of pointed out the difference between the 2 bags.

Here are some pics to show you the difference. From what I can tell, it’s not the craftsmanship, but the leather itself. The grain/texture of the flap is “more flat” when compared to the leather under the flap. View attachment 4956709View attachment 4956710 View attachment 4956712

I think my recently purchased black classic caviar flap is similar to yours. I noticed that the quilts on the flap are flatter than the quilts at the bottom of the bag but I don’t feel it’s that noticeable. I thought it was because the flap part is more rigid than the bottom part of the bag. But I don’t think the quilts on the flap are quite as flat as yours though. Having said that, I wouldn’t have noticed it on yours if you hadn’t pointed it out. If you exchange, you might get a flap that’s got a worse issue. It’s so hard to get a perfect one these days. I was in the same boat as you as I bought mine the day before the price increase in the UK and I wasn’t 100% happy with it. I wish it had puffier quilts and was a bit shinier like another flap I used to own, but it was the better of the last two in the boutique, and I didn’t want to wait and pay the increased price. I’ve given up on finding the perfect flap and have accepted that you have to accept some issues. I would ask to inspect another one before you give up yours.

I recently purchased a small classic flap in black caviar. The leather seems fine to me, but the monolisa pocket doesn't aligned. There's some minor stitching issues as well. I kept debating whether I should return it because I doubt there is one available for me to exchange. I am still conflicted and haven't decided what to do especially with the price increase set to happen tomorrow.
