TSA stole my jewelry from my suitcase.

This happened to my MIL, she packed a diamond ring in her luggage..yes we all know, wasn't the brightest thing to do, but it happens! They took the ring out and left the box..its heartbreaking to lose your stuff.

I think its about time that TSA (and whomever else is involved) step up and start taking some responsibility for this kind of thing happening in the airports. It seems like an everyday occurance anymore. If there is this much stealing going on, then maybe more screening of their employees need to be done and more cameras installed. It just makes me mad that this can happen and there is nothing they can do?!:cursing:

I try NOT to check any luggage AT ALL but, whenever I MUST, I go early and have my luggage searched, in my presence, BY HAND and stickered as searched. Then I lock it and tape it so I know it's sealed. So far, nothing's gone missing (knocks on head...er...wood).

That might be a helpful tip! So sorry about that horrible theft!

I am sorry. That's mean and rotten. Since I am naturally a little paranoid after living in NYC, I always carry in my purse or carry on. Never trust them. So much for backgound checks. Rule of thumb, never put anything that means a lot in luggage (checked in) For that reason, I do not check my LV Keepall, that's a magnet. Someone once stole my Coach glasses case with glasses, I was so angry. Again, I am very sorry.

Just reading this made me so mad. It's happened to me before. I always carry my jewelry in my carry-on bag but once I put a couple of items in my checked in bag.
One was a bracelet my sister had given me with the initials of my childrens first names on it (in monogram style)...beautiful white gold with the antique lettering...I LOVED IT!!!!
They stole it. I had it in a jewelry 'roll' bag with a couple of other items and that item was the only piece taken out. It was in it's little box and the box was still in the bag when I got home!
Called the Airport and all they told me is that it would be difficult to prove that the item was taken at the airport! I wanted to scream!
Anyway, my sister has since purchased me another bracelet to replace that first one. I felt so badly about it though. I'm so sentimental.

that's why i always put my jewelry (even the non-valuable stuff) in my purse so it's with me at all times and you're there if it gets searched and can make sure they don't take anything.
still, i'm sorry. file a claim and raise a big stink if you don't hear back from them soon enough, or at least have a lawyer send a letter threatening legal action. that usually works to speed things up and get them to take you seriously.

dang, i didn't know that this happened as often as someone just posted it did. ouchhhhhh what in the world!!! reading this thread just makes me steam and all the skanky things that have happened to some of you ladies.

This is shocking! Sorry you lost your jewellery, hope you have successful claim! Surely with so many claims going in they will do something to end this!

*hugs* i'm sorry that your jewelry got stolen. hope you have a successful claim too!

out of curiosity...when did the TSA start checking checked-in suitcases? i was only informed last week when i checked in for a flight from newark to montreal that i've to unlock all my lugages/use the TSA approved locks. i also travelled via newark last christmas when going to singapore and was never aware of this regulation.
i normally put my handbags in the suitcase as checked lugage cause i only travel using a nylon messenger bag. however when the check-in lady told us this, i decided to take out my LV bags out and put it in my handlugage. i thought may be i was just paranoid....but after reading all these posts today, i'm glad that i did.

when i came over to montrel from uk 3yrs ago, i put all my bags in suitcases and checked them in. my SIL suggested that i take out insurance for them and i just laughed it off. but now maybe i should consider doing that as we'll be moving back to uk next year/in 2 years time (depending on DH's work contract). would it be safer to check it in when we fly back or to ship it back?

my SO insists on watching the TSA workers while they go through his luggage. He once waited 25 minutes while they first went through other bags. He hasn't had anything stolen, yet!

I always take my jewel's with me in my carry-on, as well as any other valuable items. My bf's mom lost her suitcase at the Toronto airport and all they gave her were $200 for everything inside and the case. She was really PO, she had 3 designer suits in there and gifts for her grandchildren inside too.

You poor thing! I can emphathize, when my bf and I flew back from the east coast not too long ago, they stole our camera which was worth ~$3k. It was really frustrating b/c the airlines, TSA, and airport security were totally useless. I've learned not to check anything valuable in my luggage since.

Gucci fan, I am so sorry for your loss! I too know how you feel. Some lessons we learn are so painful!!

Five years ago, my 5ctw invisible set diamond band was stolen by TSA in front of my eyes and I didn't know it. I had it in my LV Luco bag, which is a tall rigid totebag. He reached in with both hands and I couldn't see what he was doing. I believe he palmed my ring that he found in my jewelry box. I was too stunned/upset to tell Bob. If I had, the police could have reviewed a tape from my incident. They keep them for 30 days. I eventally told him. It was insured and I got a replacement. But that ring was one of a kind and I miss it to this day.

Lessons learned:

Carry on your PERSON all your valuables. If you want to take two nice watches, you wear them. Don't pack them to be searched and stolen later. Go ahead and wand me, I'm not taking them off.

This means I wear all the jewels I take on a trip. So I'm blinging it at the airport but I don't care. They don't come off me, or my daughter, who wore a casual necklace for me last trip.

My small shopping handbag goes in my big tote that I carry with me at all times. My toiletries now go in big ziplock bags in my suitcase, and my LV Deauville sadly stays at home (due to airline restrictions). No one steals the ziplock bags!
