I've never had this problem before , do you mean customs at your home country after arrival will ask you for a proof that this item was an item you brought already with you and not a new one ? is it for authentication if not they will confiscate it, or for tax purposes ?

The problem with just taking a photo of yourself with the bag is that it doesn’t mean it is THAT bag. They are used to people taking pictures with one bag and then buying more for re-sale while abroad.

That’s why they wanted to see proof of the serial number for my husband’s watch.

Well that's when the receipt comes in knock on wood, it's never come to that! Watches are different though, it's much easier to buy an exact same model multiple times on any given trip than the same exact spec B/K multiple times.
