TOO MANY BAGS it's time to let go, anyone with me??

Think of it as much needed rehab....I sell my bags to reinvest towards other bags. I know ur gifts had everyone happy. Can't wait to see what u now add. I have limit for 15 bags so I can't even imagine

I wish I didn't have these hoarder tendencies lol. 10-20 is perfect. but I'm addicted to bags. I want all bags with "uncommon" silhouettes, various colors...and then of course if I get stuck on a particular style...OMG, every color please! and every material. but I do love lots of variety, and this is really my only "splurge" I spend "real money" on. I mean I always go after deals, but a "deal" is probably not wat other [non handbag lovers] would consider a deal. everything else I get for super cheap.

and yes, much needed and long overdue rehab!

I have decided that I only like want to carry lady bags now so I have been focusing on my flap collection. It's hard to narrow it down but those huge price tags make it easier to stay focused. I have a list that I established and I only buy what's on the list ... Started last year and it works..... If you put it all to paper and then photo each bag it gets easier to release them. How many do you have left btw

yes, I do. But then I see other bags I like, and they go on the list. I have to continue to revise my list, I love variety in styles, colors, and materials, so continue to edit the list of similar styles. Basically that's how I decided what to get rid of, I have many bag styles in diff colors/materials, so I'm really trying to cut down on that. Diff bag styles, diff colors, diff materials. That's going to give me the most variety, instead of one style in many diff colors and materials. So I think if I stick to that plan, I'll be ok.

As far as number of bags, I haven't taken a real count in probably almost a year now [def over 6 months]...but I'm thinking 120ish after the "shake down." lol I have probably around 70 just Dooneys, and I have a pretty significant number of Gucci bags as well [last count around 40, but I've purchased a few, and got rid of 1 since then], along with 1 LV, 1 Prada, 1 Burberry, 1 Coach, and 2 Kenneth Cole bags [not my fave brands].

Many of my bags are posted in my Photo Album and Bag Showcase, but not all of them. I just take pics as I take them out to wear them...when I remember to. I'll continue to add pics, as many of my bags are not yet included. Also, many of the bags I've gotten rid of as well, mostly Dooneys.

That seems like a plan to utilize the variety of styles colors etc. 120 is a massive number. Do you change bags daily or do some get ,ore love than others. I can't imagine the sheer volume overwhelms me. I'm going to check out ur collection now

For me it's not the number it's the fashion element. Too many bags in a short space of time as some styles and colours are more likely to be part of specific trends (which is fine of that also coincides with longterm personal style) it gives the illusion of choice but no real choices long term.

Designers/magazines/shareholders/brands' jobs depend on us falling for their seasonal products, we have to choose only what adds usefulness and pleasure to our own wardrobes.

I've sold 10 bags in 12 months. I designated those bags because I have similar but better quality and in preferable sizes. Most of those bags I've sold were not new or new-ish though, and actually I sold them for more than I paid, perhaps because they are harder to find.

As for the resale value of recent designer bags, obviously supply is too abundant over demand. Good for people buying but not great for sellers of their prized possessions.

Actually, if people think of bags as they would for the rest of our wardrobes, bags actually compare pretty well. Most things you'd have to give away.

If after all 'this', the lesson is learned that bags are an investment in one's style, I strongly believe we need to separate our 'bag-actions' from financial or self-worth then a) the cycle won't repeat and b) not so much angst will be attached to choice.

Excellent point thank you! Would you mind sharing what brands were the bags you sold? I am thinking of letting go of one or two ( to make room for new possibilities). ..

I really like this topic, great discussion so far!

I joined TPF two years ago and I think it's helped me let go more than add, maybe I'm doing it wrong & am backwards from mostly everyone else here? lol. I used to have 20+ bags and now I am down to 10 since the forum helped me figure out which styles work best for me and helped me see where I was carrying around doubles of essentially the same bag in my closet - I didn't have two of anything specific except for two Speedies (DA & Epi, I sold the Epi one) but I did have a few similarly shaped/sized/colored purses hanging around so consolidated down. Now I feel like I have a good mix of shapes, sizes, styles, strap optionality, hardware, colors, casual/fancy, etc so I'm not bored and I don't feel overwhelmed with the contents of my closet.

This year I'm doing a shop my closet challenge & so far I have not been tempted at all. In fact I even found a SLG to let go. If I hit my target, I'm going to allow myself to buy an Epi LV Alma PM which has been a long term want but I know it's not a need! I don't feel stressed out to rush out and buy one & I know I am going to enjoy it once I reach my goal. I have been meaning to start a Bag Showcase thread now that I feel like I'm at a good point with my purses so will def share once I have some time to take photos and upload for the group ☺️

I did something similar last year. I pretty much redid my entire handbag collection. I ended up selling a bunch of bags and buying a few new ones that I absolutely loved. My collection is less than half of its original size. Now I have seven bags and I use all of them at least a couple of times a month. It feels so nice to have a smaller collection of bags that I actually use!

of course

All the following were vintage, most pristine and 40 years +:
Loewe
Galvez
Susan Small
Mappin and Webb x 2
No name saddle leather, saddle-shape bag
Pristine military map bag from the former GDR
Small 1920s beaded clutch bag
1920s beaded 'misers' purse
Lucille de Paris

Some of them were on sale a l o n g time :sleepy: I play the 'long game' and never reduce. There's a bag for everyone, and people (usually 'flippers') can be very 'cheeky' :nogood:

I have another 10 sorted, and that's not including with the few posh ones at a consignment

OK...so I know many of you have seen me write about never having gotten rid of my bags [in nearly 15 years]. Well, having been inspired by many threads about scaling back collections, and I have done just that. I've gotten rid of 7 Altos, nearly 30 Flos, and countless canvas bags. Introducing, what's left of my Dooney collection.

8 Flos [well 7 Flos and 1 Dillen-Priscilla]
30 Altos
Far Fewer Canvas bags [didn't count]

I also got rid of one of my Gucci bags, but I have far fewer Guccis than Dooneys [and given those 4 figure price tags, am far more "cautious" in making those purchases haha]

Feels good and more streamlined, will allow me to wear my bags more often, and these beautiful bags have found new homes where they will get more use and appreciation.

Well done!

I don't know many Dooneys by sight, actually only 1, but I think those are Florentine satchels, I  those

I'm thinking of selling my lv trevi pm - I hardly use it! In fact I have only taken it out twice. It feels a shame as someone else can make use of it.

Another on my list is the lv never full gm Damier ebene. I have the mm size and use that daily. In my opinion if you don't use something it means it's not worth keeping!

I'm in the same club. I used to have a large bag collection (somewhere around 75 bags) - a few "junk" brands, mostly contemporary brands and 3 or 4 premium designer bags. I sold off all but 5 of my bags from mid 2013 - 2014. Then in 2015 I took the proceeds and bought a new wardrobe of bags (sometimes reselling those as I realized what I really wanted wasn't what I had just bought.)

So now in 2016, I have 32 bags. Two are currently up for sale and I think another 3 need to go. If I was brave, I might even add another 3 or 4 to the "go" list.

As I wear my bags I see what I really want and need and that makes some bags instantly "obsolete" even though I may like them. Ugh!

IDK....hmmmm... 10-20 may be perfect for many but I don't see it being perfect for you, Immigratty. 😊 You love and wear many of your bags. I think maybe your "perfect" number might be closer to 80ish.

I'm really happy for you that you got rid of some of the bags that really don't fit who you are and how you dress today. 👍😄👏 I bet that felt great!! And I know the ones that received your bags are thrilled to have gotten them.

From your other posts, it seems you've really moved to high quality bags that have a unique, show stopping beauty without being "obvious". Every time that I've seen a post of what you are wearing, it's been a stunning bag. So perhaps you can continue to weed out the bags that aren't at that "level". Someone else may be really happy to get it or you could sell it and spend the money on something fun that you may want to do but never get around to like a dance class or a day at the spa.

Thanx so much Sparkle...I try to tell myself 10-20 is reasonable. lmao

and yes, that's what I have been trying to do, thanx so much for your advice, it is invaluable! :D
