I think the 'new' D bag is a great improvement on the classic D. I had a D from 2003 and it met a tragic fate. I'm now looking for a new D. I tried on the camel media (medium) last weekend at Neimans (identical to your pic) and the leather is softer and pebbled - compared to the stiffer, smooth waxed leather from the earlier D.
It's an open top with a slight close on the drawstring, but frankly I think that's more a style element. You have to want a tote to enjoy it, but I don't think the top looks 'cut off' - it's a classic look. But when I was trying it on another couple of women came over and waited for me to finish and when I put it down one of them picked it up and we sort of all had a conversation about it...about really being certain you weren't going to be bothered by having such a wide opening on the bag. Since we live very near Chicago there are some theft and ill-timed-dropping-all-contents-as-you-exit-the-taxi concerns that you have to be comfortable with. And, I'm not completely yet. The earlier D had a zip top - at least mine did.
Still love it though.
