Tiffany Engagement ring purchase/upgrade

Hi Everyone! My boyfriend and I started looking at engagement rings (he said I can pick it out myself!)

I know we would be paying a premium for the ring if we buy it from Tiffanys but we are okay with that as I love the customer service and the designs.

I would love a 1-1.30 carat classic Tiffany 6 prong setting but because we are also house/condo hunting and are both in our mid to late 20s I'm not sure if I can justify spending that much money on the ring when we could put it towards our home instead. My ring size is 6.5 so the larger rings do look better on bigger fingers.

Do you think I should purchase a smaller Tiffany ring (0.65-0.90) and purchase my dream size down the road? Did any of you do that and what was the experience like? Our sales associate did mention that Tiffanys now has an unlimited upgrade policy and you can upgrade as many times as you like instead of the previous within 5 years if purchase. Just worried that we may not get the opportunity to upgrade down the road.

Or I could just go non-Tiffany and easily buy my preferred carat size.
1ct above are selling at premium pricing...would you consider pre-owned ones?

I wouldn't get a pre owned one.
It is so important to tell yourself a good story - you are laying the ground work for your lifelong romance and family story here! You will need the 'good vibes' down the road if you are serious about your marriage, trust me.
So try not to compromise too much in getting what you want from your ring. There are ups and downs ahead of you.
(Speaking as a married woman with three kids who still loves my husband lol. Also speaking as a woman who had to get an upgrade and sometimes regrets that necessity).
I feel 1 carat is a great 'standard' when it comes to an acceptable lifelong marriage ring. There is something emphatic about the value - love is not flashy, love is unselfish etc. a full carat is complete without ever being unsuitable for any social occasion throughout the life time to come.
If Tiffany is important to your story, stick with that.
There will be times when you get bored of your ring. It becomes like a uniform, worn every day. But if you have a great diamond, you can take it forward in life and that is a great moment of an important decision.
As I mentioned earlier I upgraded (hey if he wanted me to keep it forever he would have spent more than $600 on it). But although I am glad I did upgrade there is a certain regret that it had to be so.
Anyway I hope you have found my comments helpful. All the best for your future! How very exciting!

There is a huge price difference for those 1 ct solitiares that are sold in Tiffany stores and preowned market such as Goldia offers. There 30-40 percent discount on those items. I could save at least 4000 by buying preowned one.

Okay guys so I have a confession to make although I did love the ring my Finance gave me the colour " I" was really bothering me. He had picked it out because he felt bigger was better but it looked much more grey then I wanted. We went together today and I ended up swapping it for a VS1 colour F 0.95 carat triple ex. I'm in Love!

I did feel a bit bad taking the ring back but he said he wanted me to love it and be sure it was the one.

I'm so glad we took it back as I got to share in the Tiffany Customer service experience at the Bloor Street location in Toronto. Our sales associate was amazing and made the process truly memorable.

Here are some pics. Thinking of adding the Tiffany Jazz band later on[emoji7]

I guess my approach would be to look outside Tiffany for my ring rather than go for the second hand market. Or, I would find a dealer who deals with antique / vintage goods. Or perhaps an auction house. Somewhere where a professional thoroughly inspects and checks their goods and presents them for resale.
But of course I am just speaking from my personal preference here. Also I live in a regional area and shopping around for a second hand sale would be very difficult and tiring for me. As the bride to be I had to do all my own ring shopping by myself after my proposal, and I found the story behind my original ring a little embarrassing because it wasn't very romantic. It was a hassle and a stress finding something I wanted to wear and could afford.
I see you already have 'a plan of action' and an online source to scope.
It's not like a diamond is going to wear out (although I would have it appraised before buying to check for damage to the ring and diamond, and to match it back to the cert).
If you prefer the second hand route, and find the benefits appealing, why not? I imagine there are some lovely 'like new' goods out there, never worn.
Also, I would romantically describe the ring as 'vintage' to any busy bodies, rather than as a 'great second hand deal'. The story telling is part of the engagement magic!

Also wanted to add that it almost certainly be best to get a bride-to-be's buy-in if going the vintage route. Lots of girls could probably be practical about it if they are in on the process and they know that going vintage means they get the look they want. But it would not be unusual for a girl to totally flip out if she found out after the fact- this is an important personal item that people can be very superstitious about.
Also I don't know anything about the vendor you listed so I don't know how that works.

One other point of interest would be to find an aspect of the diamond's specs or the ring's design that you could incorporate into your story - this is a time honoured aspect of engagement sales - past present and future for a trilogy ring, that kind of thing. I know of people that have bought carat weights that have matched important dates (eg 1.04 for the 4th of a month, that kind of thing). The link can be quite tenuous but it can be another way of personalising and enjoying your engagement ring.

The Tiffany ring prices are not available online because the price of the ring really depends on the carat size, cut and clarity etc of the ring. Your best bet would be to call Tiffany customer service and give them and idea of what you are looking for and they can give you prices on the phone or to just go into your local Tiffany store.

I'm late to this thread so first, Congrats on your engagement. I also understand wanting a higher color diamond, so you absolutely did the right thing by exchanging.
Like others, I prefer your e-ring with the knife edge best, it looks very elegant, just perfect.

Hi ladies! I went downtown today so I stopped by the Tiffany and Co store in Bloor Street to try on Wedding bands. Sorry for the bad lighting. I will go back with my fiance to purchase one. I actually think I just want a plain knife edge band or do u think I should get some bling? I felt a bit like the my ring stone shone more than the diamonds in the wedding bands at Tiffany's?

The knife edge looks stunning on you :). xx

Hi ladies! Thanks for all your replies. Still haven't gotten the band yet but hoping to go this week.

The knife edge band is probably what I'll end up going with but I some of the bling bands online keep catching my eye

Officially married! Ended up getting the prong setting band for my self and the classic Wedding band in Platinum for my husband. Will take them back for engraving soon. My sales associate didn't have the new Tiffany ring box available for me but promised she would get me one once more come in.
