It doesn't make sense that a ring that was $7100 in 1999 would only cost $8600 today. Over 12 years the cost should have gone up much, much more than that. So it seems that there is faulty information somewhere.

shiba: I don't have the pic of receipt, I saw it in person. I only have pic of Cert. Will post pic later.

I found the ring with Tiff's Cert exactly the ring I am going to buy, except for the detail. I think in the 199ish... the Cert very simple like that. They didn't make formal Cert and polish, symmetry just as "Good" grade way back then.

etk123: yeah, that's don't make sense to me either. I may look at the receipt again .

One more question please. When you buy per-owned diamond , the price base on the price was purchased or current price on the market? How many percent lesser the retail value. For example : the ring was purchased in 2000 for $6000 , the current price in 2011 is $8000. How much is a good deal for that ring. Thanks in advance!

We bought a preowned Tiffany engagement ring for just under $11k. We paid $200 for Tiffany to send the ring back to NYC for a "replacement valuation," and Tiffany came back to us that the ring was worth $25k -ish. So we paid less than half of the retail value.

I need to bring my ring back in because diamond prices have soared in the past year since the proposal.

We didn't have a certificate but purchased the ring from an established/esteemed dealer/auction where two of their gemologists had been Tiffany & Co. employees for several years. Tiffany will cooperate more with your brother if he goes through an establishment vs purchasing directly from an individual. Tiffany has a love/hate relationship with the secondary market but they love the estate/antique dealers since they preserve the history/value for the brand.

I know it seems like everyone is skeptical, but it sounds like this "friend" would be coming out of the deal much better than your brother. If he's buying preowned, he shouldn't be paying anywhere CLOSE to retail price.

I suspect the receipt you saw was the valuation report rather than the actual purchase price. Their cert is certainly lacking in information and that would make me leering of paying top dollar for an unknown cut. It makes it very hard to compare but I would only assume it would be v.good or good cut at most with good p & s.

Value is a bit subjective. Branded items typically hold value better than unbranded however, the markup on branded is usually higher to begin with. From what I have seen, 30-40% of replacement is what brokers will offer where private sales are better and 50-60% of replacement seems to be more typical. Subject to location, rarity, wear etc. Trade-ins are a totally different situation.

I would ask at Tiffany for a range of prices for stones that are in the good and V. good cut with good p & s. Then ask pricing for the setting. Then you will have a better idea on the real value. You can compare to nonbranded stones and settings to decide if the up charge for the brand is worth it to you.

This ring is from someone she knows, which should make the process easier. The appraise value of today vs that of 1999 has to be different. Talk to the owner and get it reappraise by Tiffany. So then you know how much it and how much you'd be saving... hth

Hello Gimmethebag, shiba and scarlet555 : thank you for you all great inputs and information.

When I saw it in person and compare it with my Lazare Kaplan diamond with Ideal cut , p & s are excellent, F color VVS1 that ring look really good and sparkle a lots, color is white and shine.
Seller asking for $4000. Is that fair price? We are not decide yet until tomorrow.

We did search a lots from eBay and some websites, range of that ring over $5500. Some of them don't have Cert or boxes.

others may disagree but i would probably try and get a little more off that price- i bought a second hand tiffany classic solitaire that had been traded in to a reputable jeweler- it is 1.14 H VS1, all documentation including tiffany certificate, gia certificate and original tiffany valuation report along with original packaging intact- the ring was literally still wrapped in the tissue paper from inside the box and i paid 4200

omg bigheart: you got a great great deal. When you bought the ring? I can't believe Tiffany 1.14 carats for $4200 even the secondhand.

So how much for the ring my brother going to buy is a great price or just fair price?

I did a search through Pricescope on the same specs. For GIA stones the price range was $3512-$4490 for VG P & S and any cut. You would then add the cost of a setting- at Whiteflash the knife edge Tiffany Style in Platinum is $1300. So somewhere around $4800-$5800 to duplicate with a non branded setting.

The deal is really in the opinion of the purchaser. I have bought things that might not have been the "best" deal but I research enough to make an educated decision and then rarely have regrets.

Make sure you have looked at the stone in different types of light, loupe it if possible and are happy with the stone and condition of the setting.

shiba: I really appreciate your input and help me did a search for the price ranges of the stone.

We looked the ring in nature light outside and then inside the store. The setting is good but if we bought it we need to re size and polish it for sure. My brother want it for $3000-$3500 . I don't think seller will going lower than $3800.

My brother just bought the ring today. We went back to Tiffany store this morning to check out everything like diamond number, diamond condition.... when the lady looked diamond number on their system and printed the Certificate out I saw the cut is Excellent. Everything else is the same with Original Cert. The diamond stone very sparkle and fire. Here is the pic of the diamond .
