Really basic question but I’m buying - or thinking of buying a Bal moto without ever trying one on.
I have saint laurent and rick owens leather jackets.
what’s the leather like on the Bal moto in a general way. I get the impression it’s really thick. I could try buy an older one on VC. Would that be better?

Depends on the year. Personally I prefer the leather quality 2011 and earlier. Definitely thicker than RO. I don't even know how to describe it other than as a leather hug

Hello ladies!
Its been a very long time since I last posted here. Over the holidays, I made a few purchases that caused me to revisit tPF. I was very surprised & excited about some of the things I found and knew that the only people who could really appreciate them as much as I do were visitors of this site!

First up is a jacket that was the HG of many and was considered HTF just a few years ago - imagine my surprise when just casually browsing The Real Real, I came across this brand new, never worn jacket with all of its original tags attached! Thank goodness for the mild winter we've been having (up til this weekend!) because I already removed the tags and wore it a few times!

Meet my brand new 2009 Black black zippers!

Of course, if you've visited this Clubhouse and participated in Moto chat, you know that Balenciaga Moto jackets are like potato chips - you can't just stop at one! :P

So not content after my very lucky find, I kept looking and came across ANOTHER very HTF jacket and HG of many. This was one of those jackets that sometimes seemed like a mystical unicorn - sightings were very few and far between. I'm talking about one of the very first Quilted Moto jackets from 2010 -- which later came to be lovingly known as a "Chubby Quilted with Runway Zips" -- yes, this is fantastically rare ANTHRACITE! My very first quilted moto (from Balenciaga)

But wait! There's more!
The seller of the anthracite was private - not a resale site or ebay. So there was a bit of a delay between emails because it was the holidays after all! While waiting for them to respond, I started searching for info about these early quilted jackets. There was always a lot of confusion - was it anthracite or black? So while waiting for them to respond, I found ANOTHER first season quilted jacket on The Real Real that was ID'd as black. I had rather large credit & with their typical 20% discount, the price just couldn't be beat so I decided to go for it in case my other sale didn't happen or the condition wasn't as promised, etc. I figured I'd just return the one to Real if everything worked out with the private seller. Well as you can see, it worked out and long story short -- I decided to keep both! Yes, call me crazy but there's a reason (more than one actually) as to why I decided to keep both that I'll share after I share pics. For now, here's my 2010 -- "Chubby Quilted" -- moto in Black!

OMG wow!!!!! :yahoo: All 3 jackets are absolutely amazIng, huge congrats!:loveeyes::loveeyes: I can see why you have kept both quilted jackets, they are definitely different enough to justify keeping both!

The sizing is consistent regardless of the year, so the only way to tell is the leather, and then when you receive it you can check the tag to see the year. The first pic is 2009 and the second is 2010

Actually, the zippers are different -- the zippers on the 2009 version are more triangular, while the 2010 version are more square. This was also the difference between the original quilted jackets and the "second run" - the triangular zips commonly began to be referred to as "runway zippers"

I just purchased this beauty. Hoping and fingers crossed it is 2009 french made.
I asked but real real could not give me details.
Anyone know?

Its a little hard to tell, but the zippers look more triangular which would mean its probably a 2009. I've actually been seeing a lot of black with black zips on RealReal lately. Thats where I found my NWT jacket! So glad you grabbed one up! When will you receive it?

Most Balenciaga leather jackets are thick. Older jackets, especially the ones made in France (2007-2010) have the best leather - the kind of leather you just can't stop touching and petting (or maybe thats just me!) There are some subtle (and not so subtle) differences between each year - do you just want a basic black jacket or were you considering some other color? Traditional leather or quilted? And one final question - whats the weather like where you live?

As for sizing, Balenciagas were designed to be worn open - they have a slim cut, run smaller. If you want to layer you may want to size up. 2010 jackets (bronze zips) had the most generous cut/fit and most people could size down. Same with the quilted styles.

Thanks so much! I really thought I would return the black if/when I received the Anthra, but there's no way I could ever let it go!

Although the color differences are more subtle than I had expected -- Anthracite has blue stitching and blueish undertones, while the black has black stitching & is a pretty evenly deep dark black -- its the leather thats so different. The black one has leather thats almost like 2007 leather (the first year Balenciaga made leather moto jackets), which had the most incredible leather of all the years, IMO. I was lucky enough to snag one years ago, but sadly I've gained weight and it no longer fits. I don't know if I'll ever be able to wear it again -- hoping that happens (or that I can find an 07 in a larger size), but if not I'll pass it on to my granddaughter (I already gave her my grey one!). But anyway, the leather on the quilted black is so wonderfully soft and mushy and wrinkley. The leather on the Anthracite is smoother, less distressed and more consistent. Still wonderfully soft, but very different from the black.

I'm actually surprised that after all these years no one has ever shared comparisons of the two! There were always so many questions & confusion about the difference in the two colors. Obviously the color codes from the tag inside are different (Black = 1000, Antha = 1240), but a lot of resale sites don't share pics of those tags so it was always "is that black or anthra?" - hopefully these pics help (in case anyone is ever looking for one or the other -- like I was a few weeks ago!:angel:)
