Cross-posting from SOTD:
First up is my alternative to the waterfall. I use an elongated Edot knot. I didn’t invent this one, but it’s one of the first structured knots I learned how to do, and I was very proud of myself for mastering it. It has the added benefit of looking complicated, but actually being fairly simple to do. Fold in a triangle, pleat one of the sides, then without letting go of the pleats, pass the other end behind your neck and knot it around the pleated part. I’ve seen great tutorials that use a chain d’ancre to secure it, but I actually find the knot to be easier. It also stays put ALL day (unlike with the chaine d’ancre, which I find tends to loosen and slip).
Here's what the basic Edot looks like. You can separate the pleats to make it more ruffled, like I did below. It’s a GREAT knot for showing off fancy hems!
And if you pull the pleated tail downwards you get this effect:
You can get it even closer to the waterfall if you mess it up a little:
And there you have it - a similar look to the waterfall, but I can actually get it looking right every time (plus it stays put)!
Edited to add, here’s a nice short video tutorial from A Passion for Elegance showing how to do the Edot with a chain d’ancre:
