View attachment 4469551 As you can see, I went into the store nostrils a-flarin’ and double chins up!

They didn’t have much else. One cw of Jungle Love Rainbow in blue, which didn’t suit me at all. Posted above - why are all the photos automatically showing up at the top of a post? It’s driving me batty - I like to have full editorial control of the layout! (Comes from being an editor, I suppose.)

Yesterday was a hard day. It was the three month anniversary of my stepson’s death plus DH’s birthday (luckily, he did not figure out the coincidence). I was feeling so out of sorts, slightly weepy and angry and generally helpless, so I dropped everything and drove to H, in saggy jeans, a t-shirt accessorized with a few well-placed puppy hairs and carrying an ancient Benetton backpack that I normally would only wear to places like Magic Mountain. My hair was a droopy mess, and I had only put on half my normal face (thank god I now have permanent eye brows or I truly might have scared away customers. Or least their children.) In other words, I was one of the beasts in Sweet Dreams. I used to dress up or at least, be presentable when going in to H, always wearing a scarf, but this time I was filled with a strange kind of courage, a “Let them come and serve ME, as is their natural right.” This must be how celebrities feel. I lingered and tried on everything I wanted, and when a customer asked for a scarf with clouds and the staff had no idea, I said, “Perspectives.” And when they further told that customer they didn’t have any in stock, I chimed in “yes, you do, let me show you where in the case.”
Seriously, where’s a mic to drop when you need one???

Good for you!!!!!!:drinks:

If you or anyone else could find that out with any certainty, you could take bets....Every half year, Hermes plays its cards very close to its chest, eaking out the forthcoming season in irregular intervals. As the current fashion season comes to a close, H scarf aficionados wait in suspense for the new designs to be released...first comes the list (from trusted sales assistants and press releases) of designs and sizes, then slooooowly, Hermes begins their seasonal reveal, like a sartorial striptease in reverse. Only a few are officially released for sale and of those, only in select colorways. It’s intensely frustrating, as the temptation to buy or pass an item is always made with incomplete information as to what is available...but to pass on something in the hope of a better colorway, can sometimes mean losing it altogether. Sometimes, due to the storefront managers’ erratic taste or insight as to customer demand, a certain colorway will never be available in your store, or even country, unless you place a “worldwide search” and order it in. And yes the online stores can carry less selection than your local store...So, basically it’s a hybrid of poker’s bluff and highway “chicken”: Who Blinks First. It’s a very high octane marketing strategy, and you can either hang on like grim death and play it out to the end, or (as sometimes happens) walk away, and let serendipity take its course...a sort of Zen exercise in non-attachment...I notice the really experienced buyers who know that there will always be another beautiful scarf, are really good at this...it can be fun or intensely frustrating, depending on your state of mind...
This is a perfect response! Thank you! Working on the Zen part so my husband doesn't end up killing me! ;)

I guess the Zen approach will be the approach of a longterm buyer. Somehow I was able to buy 6 scarves within half a year so apparently there was no shortage of beautiful scarves at my local tiny boutique. I guess it's more about stopping by frequently.

Haha that is so true. I certainly don’t have any issues with finding beautiful things to buy, new season or not.

Yes. This is true. It's only a problem when the SA's adopt an attitude of "we just saw you the other day, what are you doing here now?" So the Zen approach (to me) would be to say to myself, at least, that I'm a collector and I don't care what what the SAs say as long as I get the HS that are most desirable to me. Collecting is an obsessive sport. The thrill of the hunt, the focus and intensity required to track down a desirable item, is, in its own way, a lot of fun. (So the response to the SA's should be something along the lines of "Bite me.").

Wait, what! My SA is usually happy to see me... I think. How often do you stop by? :)

Here we are 7 days before the start of the official start of sale for the Autumn/Winter season scarves ( in the UK) and the store still haven't received their order of the Kawa Ora colourway that I am most interested in. I know from talking to the SAs that sometimes what they order doesn't arrive at all. I also know - again from interrogating my poor SAs - that they have only ordered 2 of the colourway I'm interested in. And yet I tried it on (twice) months ago in London. They did say when I went into store a month or so ago that they hadn't received any silk for weeks and weeks so maybe what we are seeing is the last glut of spring seasons getting distributed.

There are so many things to bear in mind:-
1) has the buyer ordered any of the design you are interested in at all?
2) Have they ordered any of the colourway you are interested in and if so how many and have you expressed so serious an interest that you get called when it does come in?
3) Is your local store a flagship ( St Barts for instance that seems to get first dibs on anything for the very good reason it sells the most stuff per square retail foot of any of the Hermes stores) or is it regarded as new or business as usual? When Hermes decamped in Manchester entirely into Selfridges the store was regarded as a new one and had its ordered goods prioritised for delivery. That period has now expired but the Selfridges in London has moved into a new bigger space and it is now regarded as new and gets its order delivered as a priority - hence I've done virtually all my spending in London rather than Manchester this season.
4) These things come from a finite manufacturing capacity so stuff will naturally rumble out all across the year.

I think the zen approach is best - but I am still training myself to stop worrying about what I can and cannot have. Always best to be absolutely thrilled by something you see in store whether you are waiting for it or not. It's Hermes' job to delight us not our job to be in thrall to it.

Sorry about your Kawa Ora experience — interestingly, I gaven’t seen that many around U.S. and Europe, either. Wonder if they underestimated their popularity. Is this something you can have transferred over from a different boutique? Not sure how that works for more recent scarves.

I have heard that supply of raw material i.e. silk itself, has been a significant part of the problem over the past year and more.

That’s an interesting point. I haven’t been able to find much in the way of supply and demand estimate after a cursory google search, would be curious if anyone knows more about the space.

Oh man, you are going through so much, I am truly sorry. It’s great that the scarf-shopping provides a small measure of comfort at least. I have certainly been in a position of knowing a store’s certain inventory better than them before! Take care

Joannadyne, I’m so sorry to hear about your sadness, and great how you handled it. Your photos are always so enabling and lovely with your various lip colors.
Before you click attach photo, make sure the cursor is where you would like the photo. It will appear where the curser lies. As someone who never used the app, I can tell you it will get easier.

Thank you for the pic tips! I thought I was already doing that, but will experiment more on future posts. I’m probably doing something wrong...

Yes- Seize it by the horns! (I am sorry though that you are still going through so much. Time will make the edges a little less sharp.)

This is exactly what I encounter...and I am rarely in the shop on a month to month basis, I just have spates where I will go through all the scarves I’m interested in...perhaps every five or six months. And when I do, I am looking for something specific. I think it is a bit disconcerting for them because I know the names of the scarves, and frequently they don’t.
