The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly! 5 Tan Bags-Rehab Reveal!

I was hoping to get your opinion if you have time. I have always liked the vintage NYC satchels and after seeing how gorgeous yours came out I have been on the hunt for one. Never having seen one IRL I am wondering is it more along the lines of a handbag or a briefcase? I was hoping to use it more as a handbag as my job doesn't really call for a briefcase on a daily basis. Thanks in advance!:smile1:

My pleasure (I love chatting about my rehab project bags!) :graucho:

It's a handbag not a briefcase. It's a nice size for a vintage bag but it's not really all that large by today's standards. When I posted it in the authentication thread I called it a "small tan portfolio" until DemRam told me that it was an: "Authentic Slim Satchel Standard - Approximately 13 x 9 x 3 - Style 9430"

I posted 10 (before) pics for authentication and you can see them at the links below, including interior and creed pictures. It has the older style "glued inset serial number." DemRam's best guess was that it was made in the late 1970s.

If you look at the pics you will see that it really was in good shape. The leather was really dried out but it was very clean and the bag had been treated well in its former life.

At $20 it was the cheapest bag "on the rack of expensive purses behind the counter!" at the Salvation Army store but I thought it was the best of the bunch. I remember a hideous fake and a very dirty and beat-up signature bag and I think that they were each priced at around $35. I suppose that it was priced cheaply because it is an older style but I'll take a rare, good-condition NYC bag for $20 bucks any chance I get! The leather is very thick and I love that huge zipper!

Good luck, I hope that you find a nice one. :D

Thanks so much Kate for the great info! I have my eye on one that is a bit smaller-I believe it is the NYC compact slim satchel. It's about the same in length as yours but a bit shorter height wise (7.5"). The leather looks a bit dry but I am sure I could fix it up a bit...that's why I always am drawn to the thick, gorgeous leather on vintage bags. I really love the big Talon zipper too-very cool.
Thanks again for taking the time and I'll post pics if I decide to go ahead with it:smile1:

Been waiting to reply to this awesome thread, as a rushed response to a die hard and loving elbow grease reveal such as this is hardly fair or due diligence for a tpfer such as you, katev! With that being said, I love every bag you have shown here....City Bag USA, Court Bag, Slim Satchel, Scooter, and City Bag Turkey...though, I confess the Scooter grabs my heart the most. Love that name for what we call the ol' cross-body small bag these days.

What I revel over and admire in this reveal is the growing knowledge you exhibit/demonstrate in each project description. Your really know what you are doing, and it shows in your ability to detail your steps and results so clearly. What else is outstandingly impressive is how these bags all have clearly been made over in a way that Kristie Alley wishes she could have happen to her (LOL). From dings and wrinkles and overly exerted corners to hardware tarnishes, these bags have found more than new life....They've been BOTOXED by the bag whisperer!

Clearly your best reveal yet...and your best rehabs we've seen. You are the rehab Queen :queen: and we are so lucky to have you share your talents with us.
:worthy::worthy:

Prof, thank you for such sweet comments! "boxtoxed by the bag whisper" I love that! I must like doing this because I keep at it! Thanks, again.

I forgot to say that I love the little Scooter Bag too! I was so disappointed when the first british tan scooter I purchased turned out to be a fake, so I was really delighted to find this genuine Scooter, in excellent condition, and at a much cheaper price!

I know Ive asked before what you use, but my Stewardess bag is really dry, I mean like it even looks way more dried out than any of your pics. I've bathed it, Appled it and still it looks dry. Any suggestions? Its in great condition otherwise. Thanks!

..and its the light tan color...

I am right now rehabbing a bag. Rehabbing allows me to sit and just "think". So its therapeutic in many ways. During this thinking process I realized something else about "saving" bags that look awful and unredeemable. I found a banged up Willis with torn edges a couple of weeks ago, and I won't attempt a rehab on her...BUT.... her strap was totally FINE. And I am using that strap to restore the current flight bag I am working on. And I've learned over the past year that people are posting and GETTING upwards of $20 and $30 dollars on ebay for used Coach replacement straps. So obviously there are a lot of us out there WANTING straps. So from now on, if nothing else, I'm going to be buying any otherwise ruined Coach bags that are low in price, for their hardware or hang tags alone, to use in my other rehabs....so..thought I"d pass my thoughts along on to you LOL....though you probably already do this!!

I have a whole cabinet full of rehabbing products to choose from, I spend a lot of money on supplies! At the link below you will find info about many of the rehab products I use. I find Leather CPR works well on dried out leather and it is usually pretty easy to find and inexpensive to get at Tuesday Morning stores. I have heard that other TPFers have found it at Bed, Bath and Beyond and at K-Mart.

If the bag has lots of scratches and uneven coloration, I usually use" Black Rock Leather N Rich" but it will darken tan and light-colored bags. I used Black Rocks on my City Bag Turkey, Court Bag, and Slim Satchel above. I think that it was good to darken those bags a bit and even out the color. I buy it at an equestrian store for about $6 or $7 per jar.

If you post photos of your stewardess maybe I can give you some better advice.

Yes, I have cannibalized ruined bags for their parts and it can be very helpful!

At the link below are pics of a british tan stewardess bag that was rehabbed by ladyraven65 and she used Black Rock conditioner on it and it looks gorgeous!

THANK YOU! I appreciate your advice. I'll try and post pics this coming weekend of my bag.:smile1:

Wow, your skills are amazing! Can I ask a question? In the first bag's photos, the bottom corners seem really faded and worn but in the rehab they look the same color as the bag again. Is that polish or dye, or it just happens after washing and conditioning?
