A liquid like the ink for the silk scarves is no respecter of straight lines over whorls and curves. In fact it's more difficult because you would notice more easily of the definition between colours was awry. It all takes manufacturing precision. I can see some of the modern styles such as this season's 70cms are playing around with colour theory which I suspect is close to M. Dumas' heart with his academic background in visual art but the thing I really see is - horror of horrors - cost control. The Bouclerie scarf this season is a reworking of a popular theme using as few silk screens as possible ( whilst still keeping it interesting enough) minimising inks and manufacturing time. Using the 'tattoo' method Hermes have succeeded this coming season in making my beloved Brandenbourgs a boring scarf - but also minimising the inks used. Faconne silk takes rather longer to manufacture but I would willingly pay a premium for a 90cm faconne in a beautiful multi-coloured design that I really fancy. They could have a go at my grail - 'Les Tambours'!
But this is no time to despair - we are only at the start of the new season and my SAs assure me there will be many lovely things. And if all else fails there are those UFOs
