The Borough Bag

Hi everyone! I have a mini Borough dilemma that I'm hoping I can get some advice on. Sorry for the long post in advance.

It's not particularly exciting, but I bought a mini Borough a few weeks ago after months of admiring pictures of it. I hesitated namely due to the price (I'm trying to be very good this year) and the inability to use PCE or any kind of discount towards it.

During FB event over President's Day weekend, I decided to surprise my mom and buy her anything she wanted (she's incredibly frugal) from Coach when we went shopping. She really liked the mini Riley, so I was incredibly happy to get it for her as a treat.

I was walking around the Coach store admiring the mini Borough in black pebbled leather. I told my mom how much I've been considering the bag over the last few months. I've been looking for a small, crossbody bag for over a year. She convinced me to treat myself too, if I was comfortable doing so, since I've been working so hard the last few years -- going to grad school while working full-time, TAing, and paying for school entirely out-of-pocket without taking loans. So, I finally decided to do it.

However, since I bought it, the mini Borough has been sitting in its dustbag. I can't seem to bring myself to use it. I'm not sure if I still really like the bag or if I was just swept away by how much people love it here. I'm also not sure if I'm having buyer's remorse or the thought of spending money when I should be frugal considering grad school took a huge chunk of my savings. I'm leaning towards returning it, but worried that the bag may disappear if I decide I want it later on. The SA told me that she wasn't sure how long the line will be in the store (not sure if it was true or just a sales tactic). I should also mentioned that I found the mini Riley really cute -- in particular, the black and fake-python printed one. I know that I can use the upcoming PCE on it, but I'm really confused whether I'm feeling torn because of price or style.

Thanks for letting me ramble on. I would love to hear some of your sage advice/thoughts.

It's easy to get caught up in the hype...but, bottom line is, if you don't use it, you should return it. :D

Good luck!

people believe what they want to believe, i'm going to stay on the side of my personal experience. Coach has tried may times to curb the 'coupon monster' they created.

They have moved between varying stages of discounts; from no coupons at the outlets, the 10% - 30% off retail only, coupons for bags but not accessories, % off certain items but not others, 50% the entire store but no coupon, 50/10 off the entire store, 50/30 off the entire store......and on and on and on. When the discounts were low so were the sales, when they took the coupons away people stopped buying. When they bought them back, the sales came back. I understand they want to control this but they have yet to find an effective way of doing so.

I have a closet full of fp bags that i paid for at the very least 50% off retail, some as much as 80% off. Sure coach want to change this, but first they have to master the skill of producing at the level that popular items don't sell out too quickly. Then balancing that with not so much product that they have to fire sale it at the outlet.

Once they master this then they can move on to making the brand more exclusive. Unfortunately with coach old habits die hard, they are already on their third generation of boroughs - yes they will end up at the outlets as some point jmho.

First of all, congratulations on your tremendous accomplishment of completing grad school and also doing it debt free! You've worked very hard.:yahoo::yahoo:
How sweet of you to think of your Mom first and give her such a lovely gift.
Your purchase should feel good to you . It doesn't matter what others think, only what makes your heart sing!
Can you bring your Borough to your Mom's and compare it with her Riley? If price was not a factor which one would you love more? It may be easier to evaluate away from the pressure of being in the Coach store.
Also make sure it works for you with the three compartments. As much as I love my mini-B it fits less than a similar sized bag with one open space.
If you do decide it's the one you want you may be able to find one in a department store for a discount. Around Christmas Macy's Friends and Family sale gave 25% off and they had the black mini b. Some ladies have found them on clearance in dept stores recently too.
It is a waste of money if you never use it! Good luck and congratulations again!

Yes, I've seen your collection and they are beautiful! And your Sophia's, too......:D

I agree with you. Coach is a mass producer and they keep making bags until the wheels fall off, well after everyone who was going to pay FP for a Borough has purchased one. They have no choice other than to ship them to the outlets because they produce so many. Being an "exclusive/luxury, mass producer" is an interesting marketing plan.........

Thanks GAPeach!;)

I'm so interested to see what happens this time. However it does seem that items that sold out on the website are back again like the Oxblood Borough. They may be still cranking more out instead of letting them be a little more limited so people feel pressure to buy.
As our experienced Coach ladies have emphasized, the overstock has to go somewhere!:p

I am curious to see if Coach goes toward the way of LV...staple bags that never go away (Speedy, Alma, etc). If Coach keeps the Borough as a staple bag then they don't need to worry about getting rid of excess inventory and then will no longer need to send to the outlets.

I would love this! I was trying to think if any styles in recent memory had made it into Coach's classic bag style section. Willis, Patricia etc. are a lot older styles I believe.

Since a lot of posters on this thread have the Borough and I have only recently seen one IRL, I have a question. The one I saw was the black pebbled at Macy's. The sales person didn’t even know what it was. I spotted it and she hovered while I looked at it, so I was quick about it.

This would have been one of the "first generation, black pebbled”. I could tell that much because although she scanned the price as $598.00 but it had $548 on the tag. I thought the bag itself was nice but the strap was really thin and seemed to be just cut, not stitched at all. Am I right or did I just look too fast?
I didn’t see a black one at the Coach FP I visited, the chambray was on display. Because the SA was such a “jerk” (see my other thread) I really didn’t look at it too closely. But the thin, not stitched straps are kind of a deal breaker for me, plus the no discount.
Some of the pictures here look like the straps are stitched, some I can’t tell. Is this a difference among what appears to be three different straps?
A bit of an academic question, because I won’t buy this bag unless it is at outlet price or deep discount a Macy’s or the like so I will have to wait a while. Don’t live near Macy’s either, so it will be a hunt.
Thanks for the answer to the question… The strap really disappointed me.

Thanks for the feedback! I think I will return it and see how I feel. :smile1:

I was going to recommend that if you think that you won't use it and you like another bag -- Mini Riley -- then return the Mini B and get the Mini Riley instead. However, if you do like the Mini B and the price is the sticking issue, then, if you have a Macy's near you, they have been having 25% sales lately and I was able to order a Mini B with the sale price within the last week. Or, other department stores may have a better price for the Mini B than Coach itself.

The pebbled bags have rolled and stitched short handles. The strap is on thick piece of leather with sealant edges and a stitched shoulder pad.

I think you can see it better on the camel bag. The straps seem sturdy to me. The older version is not adjustable though and works as a shoulder bag with the long strap. The new ones are longer and adjustable.
Hope that helps. :smile1:

I truly understand your dilemma about spending the money. That is a realistic thought process and it sounds as if you work very hard for your money, so you are to be commended for that. I do happen to own the Mini B in the grey with black and white stripes (Bar Stripe Leather). I will say so far that I love it. I love the look of it and while I wish that they had not sewn the compartments together, I fit a very good amount in it. Because of flexibility, the pebble fits a tiny bit more and is just a smidgeon heavier. My strap is sewn unlike the earlier versions. I originally wanted an Oxblood and ordered one that had to be returned and waited. It's hard to say what to do as I happen to have the large Riley too and love it. I think the advice about taking it home, putting it next to Moms, putting your stuff in it in your own space is just perfect advice. That's the only way you will know. You don't want to let it go and regret it. But it already sounds as if you're on the side of return. Maybe just try this first. I have no idea if Coach will redo in the Fall but it does appear that this just may be a staple line for Coach PROVIDED people are willing to pay the price for the goods. I do love my mini B.

Thanks again for all the additional suggestions! I'm going to head to my local Coach this afternoon with the mini Borough and compare it with the mini Riley. My parents live quite a bit away, so it's not easy for me to go home for a visit. The more I think about it, the more I think I am feeling a little trigger shy, in general. Now that I'm done with school, my DH and I are thinking about starting a family, so in my mind, I feel like I should focus on saving. But, part of me wants to be selfish and buy something for myself.
