I've seen them!! I'm normally a glove girl but am tempted based on all the love these have gotten on here. I ordered the Bordeaux Teddy from Neimans (on sale) but it hasn't shipped and is now listed as backordered

If it ships, and they are still available, I'll order them too

And to respond to your note above about the Madame... I've tried it on but it didn't suit my body type, sadly.

I feel the same about the Madame... the slouchy shoulders kill it for me too. I tried to love it, but just can't. Perhaps one day.

Oh! So excited about your Bordeaux Teddy! I hope they ship it! You'll be so chic and puffy!

So I ordered myself a camel Manuela, because I have the black Rialto but needed one that's more appropriate for when I need something longer and/or to wear over a blazer (my Rialto in a size 6 is a bit too fitted for that, intentionally). I'm questioning the size just a bit...when I was at MM in HI, the SA suggested a 10. Even over a blazer or bulky sweater I felt I was swimming in it, and preferred an 8. So that is what I ordered. Attached are a few photos (warning, not exactly in a glam state)...@BigAkoya you have one of the most-admired "eyes" for fit and color, so I'm seeking your (and anyone else who wants to chime in) help. In the first 3 photos I'm just wearing it over a thin sweater. In the last 4, over a thickish blazer. The shoulders seem good but I'm not very coat-savvy. I'm not a Madame kind of girl because I think I would just drown in it. What are your thoughts?

Later I'll post some photos of the size S Teddy with the drawstring (forgot the name), and why I'll be returning it in favor of the regular Teddy short version.

Hi! Love your new Manuela! With you and the other ladies looking smashing in camel, I feel so tempted to get the camel color too! I just know I won't wear it, but I think camel is the most beautiful of all the colors.
The camel color looks fabulous on you!

On size... sizing is preference, so there is no right or wrong answer.
For me, based on your photos, I would prefer the size 10 on you. Why?

The Manuela is an oversized flowing look with beautiful big flappy lapels to highlight the face. The focus is on the lapels/chest area. In your photos, I feel a larger size would give it more that look. I feel that loose flowing look is a bit lost now. I also do think your shoulders can also use the size 10.
Worn open, you can't tell and any size really works, but worn closed is where I notice it. To me, it's most important to look great when a coat is worn closed as typically one wears coats closed in cold weather. All these models wearing coats open and loose is just that.. a modelling shot. If it's 30 degrees outside or lower (which it has been for me on the US east coast... lower!), I am wrapping up!

You might be used to a tigher fit given you have the Rialto. The Rialto has sleeves that are a bit more narrow and the armpit is cut higher. This will give the illusion of a longer torso which is probably what you're used to and like.

I love the look of a long torso too, and you can create that in the Manuela but still have the loose oversized look.

It is a bit complicated to explain, so stick with me here while I try my best!
In your photo with the coat wrapped, look at both the lapels. See how the lapel on the left in the photo is looser than the one on the right? I know it was a quick mod-shot and not a glamour shot, but I need to mention the lapel to explain.

Take that same side of the coat (the lapel on the left in the photo, above the bow) and pull it in tighter, pull the bottom wrap layer past your belly button. Most people just pull that bottom wrap layer to the center of the body, where the belly button is, but it ends up looking too sloppy for me for a wrapped coat look.

However, if you pull the bottom wrap layer past the belly button to over the ribs on the opposite side, you have a base layer to create a sleek look. Then, wrap the other side over it. You will get a nice fit and the "V-neck" from the wrap will be centered and look really nice. An added plus is the "V-neck" also comes up a bit higher which is a plus for cold weather and you do not always need a scarf (I try to avoid scarves if I can). And finally, that high V against those oversized lapels just frames your face so nicely!

So... what does this do body-wise? This gives you a nice long look, yet because the cut is oversized and you still have width, you still get that loosen flowing feel above the belt. This is also why I think a size 10 would be better because notice now that you are pulling it in more, you need just a tad bit more fabric to keep it "loose" around the chest area. Manuela is not meant to be tight around the torso.

I also think the size 10 will look better with thick sweaters that have crewneck/turtleneck as there will be a lot of knit fabric up there near the chest and also thick sweater fabric on your upper back as well. Your sweater now is a low scoop neck so there is not thick knit in your V space which if there was, you may see some sweater bunching if the coat is wrapped sleek as now the chest area is too tight.

Speaking of tightness, after you have wrapped your sweater with over your clothes, cross and swing your arms back and forth. You want to be sure it is not snug or pulling around the upper back. No one just stands still wearing a coat; people move, people lift up their arms, and there's nothing worse than seeing a coat that pulls in the upper back shoulder.

I hope that made sense. That's just my thoughts, and again, it's whatever size you prefer. There is no right or wrong. I just want to share my thoughts here to help you decide.

When I got my first Manuela, I was used to very tailored coats. I work in a conservative environment and dress very tailored (e.g. suits). I was not used to the Manuela being so "loose." After a few wears, I love it and am glad I went with the looser fit that was out of my comfort zone.

Plus, the look now is very loose coats, so another reason why bigger is better than smaller.

I also want to add...
You made a perfect bow with that belt! Fabulous! The "Max Mara way" as the SAs have shown me. I love the look and have tried doing it, but it takes me forever, and I can't seem to ever get it right on the first shot. Your photo has inspired me to practice and get it right! You did it perfect with one short tail and one long tail (I give up on the short tail and loop).

One more add...
I love how you positioned the bow over the seam edge and did not place the bow on the center of your coat. My SA told me to do that as well, and I love that look. Putting the bow over the center now looks odd to me as I am so used to putting it exactly on the edge as you have done. Looks really chic on you!

If something about your size 8 feels a bit off to you now, I would suggest you order the size 10, think "loose", and see if you might like the 10. Throw on a thick crewneck sweater.

Yikes... sorry for the long post. I shall zip it now!
I hope this was helpful and congratulations again on your new coat!

Oh my gosh, see???? This is why I called out to you in my post! I knew you'd figure out what, if anything, I wasn't getting right with the fit. I don't know if you realize just how helpful you've been (here and on the VCA threads...might be tagging you there at some point as well!!) So THANK YOU! :flowers: I will order a 10 and see. Funny, that's the size the SA recommended, and when I was aghast at the "looseness", both she and my mom shook their heads and said, no, the 10 is perfect. Should have listened. The other thing I think I was struggling with is tying it tight enough to give me a shape. I'm busty but lean with short torso and narrow hips, so not a lot of curvature. Maybe the 10 will give me more width on top and at the bottom. We shall see!

As for the wrap/tie, well I guess I got it half right. I did get the outer half wrapped but neglected to pull the inner side tight enough, which, ironically, would be easier if it was a size larger. :P The tie part I actually learned here on this thread, but wasn't actually practicing it it kind of just "happened"!

And for my next trick, the drawstring parka. This is a S. I just don't like it on me. Last year around this time I tried the "short" Teddy coat, which I really liked. I cannot find it anywhere anymore. I could try this in an XS but I am iffy on how low the drawstring is on me. So now I'm leaning toward the jacket, maybe in blue to be different. Looking for a casual coat I can wear with jeans etc that isn't a fur (have that) nor my parka: https://us.maxmara.com/p-1086022306006-caserta-midnightblue.

Attached photos of the parka. Already sent it back.

I agree with you on the low drawstring. I do not like low drawstrings either. I think that style makes me look shapeless, and even for a loose fittng jacket, I prefer some type of silhouette.

The Caserta moto jacket in your link is very nice. I like it a lot, reminds me of Top Gun. It's a moto jacket look which means the jacket will be short and hit at the hip. That might be what you are looking for, but it's a lot shorter than the Teddy you tried on which covers your bum more like the Rialto.

Which means to me....
- Because this jacket is short... it's good for warmer fall weather but not cold winter days. But... the irony is that because it's the Teddy fabric with alpaca, this jacket is going to be really warm as a short jacket (alpaca is crazy warm). This is kind of odd for me. It would be like having a super warm short fur coat. When you would wear it and not sweat to death or look a bit silly? I think of short jackets for 50 degree weather, but wearing this puffy jacket in 50 degree weather seems a bit odd looking. That's just me. It may work for you though as you might wear cropped jackets on cold winter days. For me, when it gets cold, I pull out the long coats! I hate cold weather.
- Also because it's short... if you wear any tops longer than your hip, that top will be longer than the jacket. I wear a lot of long sweaters in the fall and winter, so a moto style jacket would not work for my tops as the jacket length is too short. I am not one to let shirt/sweater hems fall past the jacket. I know some ladies like that style, but that's not me.

Here is another view of the Caserta moto jacket. You can see how short it is; on the model it's above her crotch (see photo below too). See how the model has to wear a short sweater (look at the length in relation to where her hip/crotch is).

If you like that look, I do like the jacket a lot and love the moto vibe. I personally do not dress moto vibe (not my style), but I do love it on others who like that style.

If you decide to buy it... a tip...
I see this jacket has leather side tabs. I have a Max Mara coat that also has leather side tabs. My coat fabric is camel, and the color is camel (yes, the color I never wear!:heart:).

Over time, the edge of that leather may curl slightly, depending on how stiff that leather is (my leather is lamb, so it's probably softer that this jacket which the leather looks like calf/goat). The tip of the leather curled on my coat and made it look cheap which annoyed me. However, there is a nice fix. I took it to my tailor, and she stitched it down. It was easy and looks fine now. The downside is you will not be able to adjust that strap anymore, but once you decide on what notch to put the buckle through, it stays that way all the time anyway. This is just a tidbit to share in case you get the coat and it happens to you in a few months. Don't worry, it can be fixed to keep it down.

It appears I need more guidance.

My Bordeaux “Tedgirl” has arrived. The color is gorgeous. Somehow, this doesn’t fit like the “teddy” I’ve tried on at the Max Mara store. My Small Bordeaux fits more like a XS in Camel and Grey. It’s very odd. Any thoughts?

I went back to the Max Mara store yesterday to try on other colors to make sure the Bordeaux was the one I liked best and asked to try on a small. It was so obnoxiously big that I sized down to an XS at the advice of the SA. But now I’m wondering if there is something off about my Bordeaux.

I do not own a Tedgirl (I drown in Teddys/Tedgirls, sadly, it's not a good look for me), but I am sure those who have one will chime in to share their actual experience when wearing it.

However, to help if I can...
As I recall from my SA regarding the Teddy and Tedgirl, the Tedgirl is an oversized version of the Teddy. It is bigger, and they are not the same coat. If your Bordeaux is a Tedgirl, it's probably why it fits differently on you than the original Teddy.

You can check your product code on your coat... it will show which style you have. It sounds like you got a Tedgirl based on your description of fit and how much larger it is.

Product code:  1016062906001 - TEDDY
Product code:  1011033106007 - TEDGIRL

Also to help out... I shop at NetAPorter a lot, and I love how they list the exact measurements of the pieces. It really helps me shop as I'm a big fan of proper fit.

I checked the measurements of the Teddy and also Tedgirl for you, and yup... the Tedgirl is much larger.
Here are two snapshots for your reference. The red coat is the Teddy, and the white coat is the Tedgirl.

You can see the bust in the small Teddy is 36.2". The bust in the small Tedgirl is 55.1" which is a lot bigger.
Hope this helps.

UPDATE: If you are metric gal (not sure where you live), you can go to netaporter.com to see these pieces and click on the metric measurements.

I’m now further confused since my experience has been opposite. The camel teddy was much larger than the Bordeaux tedgirl in the same size. I guess the question now is not just about the color but about the fit.

@BigAkoya
Thank you for the very through reply again! You have been so helpful on my Max Mara journey!

If you are not absolutely set on the Teddy, maybe go for the Madame.
The Madame has the same rounded shoulder, oversized kimono sleeves look like the Teddy.
The Madame fabric is gorgeous, and it's a beautiful coat. One day, if I start to like that look, I may just dive in and start with white. I love the white.

If you like camel, the Madame is stunning in camel. Just a thought.

Good luck to you. I am sure you will find a coat you love. Happy New Year!

Hi everyone,

I recently purchased a coat and noticed that the tag is very different from the regular tags I see. After googling it, I found some results. One coat is on 1st dibs as well with the same style tag. Can anyone tell me what the difference is, if I should be worried, etc?

TIA everyone!

Apologies to admins - there is no Max Mara under premium designers..

My saga continues. I ordered the same Manuela in a size 10 to compare. One of them (either 8 or 10) is going back Monday.
I did a side to side photo edit to show how the 2 fit differently. Not much, but enough that I am strongly leaning toward the 8, unless I can be convinced otherwise. The most noticeable thing for me is that when overlapping the front, the slash pockets ended up so close to the very front so my hand wasn't where it naturally would be when in the pocket (side). Sleeve were slightly longer, and shoulders slightly wider. Made no difference in fit over a blazer as they both had ample room. Just to be cruel  I'm not going to say which of the 2 in each photo is the 8 vs. the 10. (sorry photos won't embed in-line as they are not a standard size)

@BigAkoya :flowers:
After much deliberation and trying on of both coats a zillion times, I ended up with the 10! 8 "fit" but a dear designer friend advised me same as you....it is a different look and certainly more interesting on me to go with the bigger one!
Hi! I read your post and looked at the photos. The 10 looks great on you. For a loose fit, I like the shoulder seam to be slightly past the shoulder. Otherwise, a shoulder seam can look a bit too "fitted" at the shoulder and has the potential to turn the coat into an A-line look, especially with the loose sleeves and all that fabric. The shoulder needs to stay a tiny bit slouched. I hope that made sense.
For what it's worth...
On the front pockets, my Manuela is exactly like that too, and I love it! I actually prefer that pocket placement, slightly toward the front, on a loose coat. To me, I think it creates a casual chic look... envision it like when you put your hands in your front jean pockets and casually stroll down the streets. Plus, that extra inch of "wrap" in the front will come in handy when it's freezing.

Congratulations on your new coat! It looks gorgeous on you! :hugs:
