I have the Manuela, the Teddy and just got the Madame too. They are all very different and I honestly can't say which model I like the most, to me they are all beautiful.
This past week in UK has been between -5C and -1C so I got the Teddy out and it is very cosy and comfortable, definitely the warmest of the three however I do get more wear of Manuela purely because of the weather conditions in UK (it's not that often when the temperature drops below 0). Manuela is still very, very warm coat and goes IMHO with everything. Not that it has to be below 0 to wear the Teddy but Manuela could be worn a lot longer during autumn, through the winter and early spring as opposed to the Teddy, which I would normally wear only during the coldest months. We are in the middle of winter now and it is normal to be drawn towards the Teddy, which is a beautiful coat however if I had to choose only one coat (being practical here:smile: between Manuela and Teddy, I would go for Manuela purely for the versatility of it but saying that, if you live in a cold climate and you love the Teddy, go for it, it is an amazing coat and I can't thing of one negative think I could say about it (wears very well, still looks as good as the first day a got it, warm, comfortable and it looks amazing IMHO)
I hope that helps. Whichever you decide to go for, I am sure you'd love it:heart:
Wow! Thank you for the thorough reply. I live in the NYC area. Winters get cold but not obscenely so.

You are probably right. The Manuela is certainly more versatile. I could see that would get a ton of use from it.

Maybe the teddy should be my second and it’s very good to know it holds up beautifully.

I went a bit nuts and went from no Max Mara coats to 6 in the span of this quarter. I got the Rialto in camel and Navy (both in US 2), and the Manuela in 4 colors (Navy, black, camel, and beige). Yea….when I like something I go really overboard.

We’ve been having a cold streak in the Bay Area so having these coats have really come in handy / I wear them everyday. While the Manuela has a great “career woman” vibe, I might actually prefer the Rialto for everyday.

Love your coats! I wish I could love the Rialto. It's such a great design, but I didn't like it on me. It looks great on you.
On Manuela... I think you need to go for five and get the red! I'm on the East Coast, and it's getting cold, so I've been wearing my red Manuela. I love it, and I get a lot of compliments on that shade for some reason. It's a nice red, not too Christmas-y, yet not too rust. It's a great medium red.

Congrats on all your new coats! They will last you forever!

I've read all of your posts on the Manuela! You have been SO informative in all the posts you've written in this thread! For Manuela, I got the Navy in size US 0 which is a good fit, but the others I got in US 2 as the US 0 size is SO hard to come by / difficult to locate. I had some friends in Europe pop into MaxMara shops to inquire about the coat, and London and Heathrow were all sold out of US 0, 2, and 4. I'm not sure if MM is having supply chain issues, but apparently they are selling like hot cakes. The Madame was sold out in the smallest sizes too. I resorted to having some friends in Japan pick it up for me from Omotesando and ship it to me. The US 2 fits a little loose, but it's a pretty barely perceptible difference. I think in between sizes is only 0.5 inch increase in most metrics (shoulder width, length, etc.).

Do you find that the Manuela can carry your through the coldest days on the east coast? I'm realizing that I can wear camel hair down to 32F / 0C, as long as I layer correctly and have scarves/gloves. Below that, I start switching to down and puffers as I have a strong fear of the cold!

Yes, I agree with size difference is pretty minimal, especially since Manuela is an oversized look. I went back and forth between size 2 & 4, and as you said, it was so minimal, I went with the 4 so I can easily put my coat on when I wear thick sweaters. This is especially true since thick sweaters are so popular now.

On temperature, I hate the cold too!
I am a big fan of mittens. You gotta get mittens over gloves if your hands get cold, and mine are always cold.
I have worn the Manuela in temperatures as low as 20F. However, I really bundle up on those days which includes a scarf around my neck, mittens, and tall knee high boots. Anything below 20F, I will add a beanie hat (you lose a lot of heat from your head).

The double-layer wrap effect...
Another reason why I went with the large size Manuela is the hidden benefit of the double-layer wrap. I seem to favor coats that wrap. Why?
Because when you wrap yourself up, it's like getting double layers in the front of your body. With the Manuela in a slightly bigger size, I can pretty much wrap my front in double layer effect... super warm! Just take one side first and bring it around snug. Then bring the other side over it. It looks great too. I think this helps a lot in keeping me warm.

I learned that double-layer wrap idea from a Burberry SA. I was buying a trench coat (e.g. Kensington), and when I tried it on, I started to tie it normally and it kind of got bunchy. The SA then kindly showed me "another way to tie it" (e.g. her nice way of saying you're doing it wrong!) She basically took one side of the coat and pulled it over snug to my body (did not use the buttons), and then pulled the other side the same and then tied the belt. It made the coat look really chic too. Oh, and she put the knot NOT in the center, but right over the line of the outer edge of the wrap. I love that look.
I know... off topic and I side tracked, but I wanted to share that tip.

Back to warmth...
Mittens... the secret to warmth for me is mittens (not gloves). If my hands are cold, no matter what coat I wear, I always feel cold. In super cold weather, I have a pair of sheepskin mittens that look crazy, but they are super warm. They are made in New Zealand, and I order them online and have them shipped to me.

It's been in the 40s, and I have been wearing my ivory Max Mara mittens which have been fine. I really like the ivory ones. My husband says they look so cute, like paws.

Speaking of sheepskin, if I may go off-topic for another two seconds...
I also have booties that I wear at home when it's super cold. These are so so warm! I love the soft sole bottom. These are also by Kiwi and made in New Zealand.

Now you make me want to buy the camel Manuela! I already have two other camel Max Mara coats though and rarely wear those. Ironically, the classic camel shade is the shade I wear the least.

By the way, if you are interested in the red Manuela, Saks, NM and Max Mara website all have red. You probably red my post on the rust-red Rialto from the Max Mara website, so if you decide to get red, I would suggest getting it from NM or Saks as they probably have a different batch of red which is more a true red (unless you want a rust-red).

Hope this helps.

A question for those of you who own a teddy, do the shoulders wear off from carrying a bag? I commute to work with public transportation and carry a heavy tote with laptop, lunch, etc. I ordered mine, and now I am thinking how practical it would be for my lifestyle. Thanks!

What are your thoughts and opinions on the teddy in Bordeaux?

I’m comparing it to the dark grey and camel. Though the camel feels most traditional, I am drawn by the uniqueness of the others.
Hi! For winter coats, I am a fan of color because it pops.
I have black and camel Max Mara coats, and while they are beautiful, I love the color coats the most. In a sea of neutral colored winter coats, color pops and makes a statement.

I think Bordeaux would be gorgeous. Bordeaux almost has this "fuzzy rich fur" presence, very intense which is beautiful, but not too in your face as Bordeaux still comes across as a deep neutral.

Hope this helps. Good luck and congratulations on your soon to be new coat!

Thank you for your opinion.

I cannot get the teddy out of my mind and trying to decide on color has overtaken me. I’m afraid I’ll regret my decision in a year or two. Your points are spot on how I was thinking about Bordeaux too. Thank you for confirming that it is a neutral.

Another way to decide is this…

The Teddy in camel is trending now, and there are many look-alike Teddy coats. A few years from now when the Teddy is no longer trending, will the camel be classic to you or boring? The problem with super trendy pieces is that people remember the original hence to me, I prefer to buy a variation. That’s just me.

If you want to be in the moment now, I would get camel. It’s the original big supersize coat look.

I think if you worry it will get dated after a few years, I would go with Bordeaux for the unique look.

I personally would choose camel over gray if you want a safe color.

To me, the Teddy cut is so oversized and unique, you need to ask yourself what color you would feel chic wearing 5 years from now.

Finally, do you have to have a Teddy? The Manuela gives you a similar oversized slouchy look, but it is a bit more polished. The fuzzyness of the Teddy is cute now, but when that trend fades, I think you may appreciate the beautiful fabric of the Manuela more. It really depends if you want a trendy coat now

Just a thought.

All very good points. I’ve tried on the grey and camel and loved them both. I’ve order a Bordeaux to try since my local store didn’t have one.

I tried the Manuela on and loved it. On me, it fits slim. Very feminine and beautiful. I will own one eventually.

But there is something about the teddy that makes me feel chic, like Cruella Deville in her big fur coat. Maybe not the best example but I hope you understand.

I am not drawn to the teddy trend particularly. I have never admired any of the many dupes. It’s more that this coat is so ridiculously oversized and I am petite in stature that it just feels special. I am afraid slightly of how long the trend will last but I’ve learned that even with classic items, things change and everything looks slightly dated with time.

Sorry, I meant to say Madame, not Manuela. The Madame is the one that is similar to the Teddy as it was inspired from that same 80s oversized look.

I get your look you want…
Big oversized chic glamour, drowning in a coat! All you need are oversized eyeglasses to complete the look!

I would go with Bordeaux. I think while camel is classic and safe, to me, camel also looks a bit sporty because everyone sees it as a big teddy bear, and not so glamorous. I think Bordeaux will give you that chic glamour. For camel, the Madame in camel is more glamorous to me.

I can’t wait to hear what you think of the Bordeaux. I recently bought a red Manuela and have been wearing it to death as it’s cold here now on the US east coast. I find the red very neutral, yet it still pops.

You really can’t go wrong with any Max Mara coat, and it’s all preference.
Good luck to you!

Speaking of red...
As I posted earlier, I am loving the red Manuela. I decided to get matching red gloves and love them.
These are the shorter length and fit much better than the ones I have from earlier seasons. I posted a photo below of the red leather glove shade compared to the red Manuela shade in case anyone might be considering this red leather glove.
I also had to sneak in a photo of my white paws so the little guy wouldn't feel left out! I really love my white mittens... I may get a backup pair!

I've seen them!! I'm normally a glove girl but am tempted based on all the love these have gotten on here. I ordered the Bordeaux Teddy from Neimans (on sale) but it hasn't shipped and is now listed as backordered

If it ships, and they are still available, I'll order them too

And to respond to your note above about the Madame... I've tried it on but it didn't suit my body type, sadly.
