Interesting thread. Out of the bags I've sold, I think I lost most on my LV Sofia Coppola MM bag. I sold it to get the PM size (which I should have waited for in the first place sigh!). Maybe because it's one of LV's more expensive bags but without any obvious branding?
But honestly, I don't feel sad over the loss, big or small. For me, once I've decided that I'm no longer in love or reaching out for a certain bag, it has to go. I like having a small collection (small is subjective of course). I see it as, whatever I get from selling means getting my next bag at a discount haha.

I like that perspective, lol!!!:yes::tup:

I've yet to add a red bag to my collection but I really want to. A red Chanel was on my list but I think I'll choose something different like Strathberry, very affordable.

Did you sell the bags on eBay or on your own?
I sold one on my own and one through a reseller, after months of trying on my own. I buy color from non-designer brands now...

Yea. This was my face too. Lol!
I've recently learned that exotic skins don't retain the same percentage resale value as regular leather bags.
I had no idea. But I still would have thought it would retain value at least a little bit better. Especially since I get tons of compliments on it. And Celine is a desired, high quality brand.
Oh well :shrugs:

LV Vernis Alma BB in red. I think I paid 1500 and it sold for 600 brand new. Vernis = HUGE losses. The other was a Chanel tote in pink... paid $2200 and got $850. Lesson: not everything Chanel is worth something in the end, and pinks/reds are poison for resale. I was pretty hurt by those two losses but the bags were not being used and I wanted to get other things. This was early on in my buying of lux goods and I haven't suffered a huge loss like that in a long while. Pre-loved 99.9% of the time for me now = no huge losses anymore, and quite a few gains if I resell.
Yes, Yes, Yes! Buying preloved always saves money on the front end and the back end. :ghi5:

Vernis or patent are the kiss of death for resale. It’s really polarizing. I’d never buy another patent bag. I have a patent Chanel flap that I’ll die with because I refuse to take the hit on resale.

But, I’ve had results opposite from the ones you’ve had with red. Black definitely always sells the best. But, I find red is a close second.

I’ve also had a hard time buying Chanel pink and red at a good discount. They always seem to sell higher than I think is reasonable. Hmmm... now I’m puzzled. Lol!

Don’t give up on color for designer if you want it. :flowers: I’ve sold many colored bags very well. It’s usually brand and model that drive value the most in my experience.

i think chanel has poor resale value.. even with the classics.. there's just so many chanels being listed on eBay that.. buyers have a lot more option to look around and bargain. i tried selling brand new medium reissue and i can't even get $2500 .. that's almost a 50% loss for a brand new bag with receipt, box, dustbag and everything

louis vuitton also has poor resale value as well.. tons and tons of louis vuitton on eBay and second hand stores

lesson learned: try to buy pre-loved items from now on :hrmm:

I think the chanel re-issues are specifically known for bad resale. The best resale is for classic flaps and boy bags. Also I'm not an LV expert but the monogram NFs and speedies seem to hold good value while all the other styles not so much. It's really only certain styles in a brand a not a brand in and of itself that holds up.

I usually recoup about 65-80 percent of what I paid with premier brands. Occasionally I’ll make close to what I paid or make a small profit. A professional reseller might think I’m doing a bad job reselling but as a private collector, I consider myself doing all right.

The worst bags I’ve had to sell are contemporary brands; I’ve had to sell those next to nothing or give them away in order for me to even get rid of it. I don’t feel too bad about those because I usually keep them for many years and have used them a ton. I’m thinking about giving away one of my clutches to my mom since it’s not selling at the moment, and I just bought a new bag over the weekend that fits my needs and style much better.

I absolutely love buying preloved!

I haven't sold many bags from a premier designer, but I soon will sell more, so this thread is both helpful and a reality check.
For my bags from contemporary designers, I'll be lucky if I get back 50% of what I paid.
When I sold my LV Damier Ebene Speedy (purchased in 2007, in very good condition still), I received about $100 less of what I actually paid for that bag. Helps that I purchased that bag in Paris (where it was so cheap at that time) and the price of the Speedy went up over the years.

Confirming that the Speedys hold value, if maintained well. I was surprised at how much I got for my 10 year old Speedy 30 recently. Purchased it for about $600 in 2007, and was able to sell it for $500 recently.

I simply refuse to pay full price these days..obviously I am no longer as eager to lay my hands on the latest model and have the patience to wait. I recently bought an LV piece straight from the boutique after a hiatus of 4 years..I just refuse to take a hit of 50%!
Here in Asia, Tods is not appreciated. So hard to sell them and you get like $100 or $150 for leather models. And I happen to love Tods! Also Marc by Marc Jacob’s! I sold one for $70 when I bought it for $600-$700!

There are def more buyers at 'entry level' styles across the board than the discerning connoisseur at even slightly higher price points. Having said that, the very high so-called investment bags like H Bs and Ks in bright red, pink or Himalayan croc or other brand cult editions sanity disappears altogether.

But that's because the price has gone up since then. That's still a good deal on a classic, well maintained bag for someone that is comparing against a new LV Speedy.

Possibly my biggest hit were on Tod's and Prada bags, they were worth less than no-name vintage bags. I sold a Tod's Miky (sometimes spelled Mikey too) for £40 after fees, other Tod's and Prada bags I've given away. My Marc Jacob's Venetia was £6&& back in the day, I'd rather wear it than sell it, it's such a fabulous bag and the style is quite retro anyway, I get more compliments on that bag than most newer ones. My Chloes I wouldn't bother listing either.

I keep thinking about an exotic "lesser known" Hermes bag like a plume, but it's hard to know that it will lose 3/4 of it's value once out the door. When buying exotics it seems that it has to be for true love alone, with no thought to residual value if tastes change.

There was an part exotic Plume in Miel gator about 4 years ago. The entire side panels were alligator and the handles, top bottom and sides were Swift, which for me was the best part of practical and beyond fabulous. It was 'only' £2.6K more than my Babmou Swift leather (apologies to people not used to H prices). Sort of regret not buying the brown one now  hang resale!
