Tell me about the differences between the Step & the Brief

I'm considering my first BAL, and initially I was looking at the day bag hobo, as I love the slouch... then I realised it just had the one handle, and I like my bags to have two handles for easier access and reaching in for stuff.
So I started looking at the city, as that seems to have a big following and great support here on tpf.
However I just went in to Richmond to Matches fashion to try one on for size before buying one off the internet... and I tried on a bag which I think is a step or brief (from looking at pics here)... I can't really tell which one it was thought, and the SA wasn't that helpful with names. I asked her if a purple one I tried on was a day bag and she said "yeah I think it would be good for the day, this clutch would be better for the evening!"
So I think I'm liking the brief or step... could someone enlighten me on the differences? When I tried it on it would fit on my shoulder...

The bag in the link above is a Brief with Giant Silver Hardware 
. The color looks like this season's (f/w 08) Ruby. The Step is actually smaller - closer to the size of a City - is not flat like the Brief is, and only comes with Regular Hardware. HTH, and gorgeous choice if you end up purchasing!
