I will add that one of my all-time favorite movies is 'The Jonses' where the teen daughter wears tons of Hermes- I actually love seeing the freshness that young people bring to something as classic as an Hermes scarf. And it definitely keeps the brand from becoming out-of-date & old-fashioned!! So certainly I have nothing against teens wearing H or any other high-end brand. But a whole group of Birkins *was* a shock!!

this whole thread seems a bit judgmental. i always feel uncomfortable when people try to assert who can/cannot is worthy/unworthy to carry hermes, as it is a slippery slope with age, gender, income, etc etc...

i think there are things other than hermes that teenagers, and adults, can aspire to. i can't tell whether you have an issue with the fact teenagers carry the same bag as you, or that their parents gave it to them? personally, i try not to dwell on things i do not have the power to change and just try to be happy with what i have.

I'm sorry if it came off as judgmental- that's not how I meant it. I personally have never before seen a teen carrying a Birkin, much less a group of friends with Birkins. It just surprised me, that's all. And I *do* think they were real- my point was that this is an area where parents buy their kids VC&A jewelry- so the Birkins being real is not out of the realm of possibility.

Well, fake would be the first impression but there are so many rich 2nd, 3rd generation kids now, ie JC's kid, the Thai's rich socialites, somebody like Hilton sisters or Nicole Richie and some may even carrying their mom's:graucho: (i hope i could):roflmfao:. However when a teenager is carrying a Birkin, it looks like the birkin is carrying them, in my opinion.

I mean, when you get a hard-to-find $10,000 bag at age 15 what do you have left to aspire to? I guess they may have been fakes- I didn't get close enough to authenticate lol!! But carrying a fake to a shopping center that has Hermes would take some guts!!!

Exactly.

Also, had one girl been wearing a Lindy, another a Jypsiere, another a Garden Party I wouldn't have been at all surprised. It's not so much about the price with a Birkin but more about it being a rare, hard-to-find bag-- the ultimate bag, if you will, at least how it is portrayed in the media. But I suppose teens are more savvy than I give them credit for and if they want something they will figure out how to get it!!

You're right. Who am I to judge?

+1

I'd probably assume it was borrowed from mom, either with or without consent if I saw a very young person carrying a Birkin.
I know I used to "borrow" my mom's things all the time at that age.
If my mom had a Birkin back then she would have had to literally keep it locked up to keep me away. Lol!

100% with ya.:smile1:

were i live and i travel a lot for work, major cities. i do see them and yes i do know of 18/20 year olds with birkins usually their mothers who loan them and .... in many cases and i have seen this more....on youngsters black and gold leather Bs usually well worn, i assume the mothers have moved on to exotics or newer bags and share the basics with their daughters.

now having had an H bag since i was very young, i don't find it as odd thing is in my family H has always been around so..... i got a kelly granted vintage and hand me down but still a kelly. me and my sister very much adored and took care of and wore a lot ...... so....... not so odd and honestly not so shocking if you teach the values and lessons that must go behind the idea of owning an H bag !!!

plus i hate the idea of inheriting a bag, or getting it after my mom/grandma dies. in my family the idea of sharing it all when you are still together is the usual way we do things young or old ... i think if i were king or queen of a country i would much rather see my child crowned and share the moment ..... i mean ........... life is so short i would love to see my child wearing my things and so on.......

I enjoyed reading your post very much!!! I would love to see a teen with a well-loved, classic Birkin or Kelly. I would automatically think of the history of the bag, generations, etc. What a beautiful thing!!

LOL maybe the teen and her mom swapped bags? I think the Evelyne would actually be very cute on a teen!! Birkin sightings are very common at this shopping center- when I have lunch there I swear there is at least one Birkin at every table!!! This is the same shopping center where I once saw a mom shopping for a birthday present for her daughter's 8th birthday...she was deciding which necklace to get her from Van Cleef & Arpels!!

I actually don't think they swapped bags as the teen was trying on an Evelyn for herself (& mom ended up buying it for her) so I really think it was her own UV Kelly. I don't "judge", per say, teens with designer bags. But, I do look back on my own youth and remember that I had such little appreciation for expensive things. I did not know the value of a dollar-truly. It was only with age, busting my butt in school & graduate school, and working hard throughout my life that I now have a deeper understanding and appreciation of expensive items. I would've had no business with a $10K bag when I was 15 (& I'm only in my late 20's now) because, honestly, I was a little idiot who didn't understand how hard my parents worked to provide for me. Of course I'm not saying that ALL teens would think the same way I did-that would be such a blanket statement. Just sharing my experience. On that note, I've often told my SO that, when & if I have a girl, I would buy her a "baby" Birkin when she's around age 10 or so. I have every intention of providing for my future child & even spoiling them like crazy....but they wouldn't be rewarded unless they were to show me a certain level of maturity & an appreciation for hard work.

Yep and in my circle it happens to be like that... Just look at the Wildlife Sightings and a few pages back, I posted about the sightings I made at one of my friends 18th Birthday.... Geez.. You could build a house with the number of H, LV, Chanel, Celine, Givenchy items there...
