Tassels Splitting - Again!??!!

Tassels that are glued so lightly like the way Bal glues them, are by nature pretty weak. Add to that, thin or irregular thickness of the leather that the tassels are cut from, and you have a rip waiting to happen.

Hopeless back-up service from a "luxury bag" company! If Bal used proper glue in the first place, the tassels would not split. My Sang split with the first use, so I gently took apart both halves of ALL the tassels on the bag, and glued them back together with a special leather glue - they are still soft, have not discoloured one bit from the re-gluing, and have never split since then, despite with continuous use.

Bal is incredibly miserly NOT to hand out the extra tassels, and other retailers should be happy to order them in or give them to authentic Bal carriers (walk into the shop with the bag with split tassels).

Maybe they need to change the design for their tassels: sew a single seam down the centre of every tassel in the same coloured thread as for all the seams of the bag.

On second thoughts, that (marginally - I've done it myself - takes less than 90 seconds) bit more "labour" may send the Bbags up another $100 or so???

yes, i agree w using it as a patch test but could they give us any smaller piece?? hehe. i'm sorry to sound cheap, it's just that paying so much for my bal bag, tassels shouldn't split and if they do, we should b able to get it replaced w o jumping through fire. i'd appreciate it so much more if my tassels can b replaced more easiy.

Oh yeah I agree. I just wouldn't mind having the the patch in addition to the extra tassels. :p

^^ I agree with you on the Pourpre tassels! I recently had a pair shipped to me together with an '08 Marine and I was shocked to see and feel the difference in the quality!! Marine was thick, puffy AND spongy whereas Poupre was papery thin!!! Why the difference in the quality???? It's obvious which will split first!

Great ideas! I love your thought about stitching the tassel halves together.

I have also glued tassels back together, but have had considerable "stiffening." Do you remember the brand name of the leather glue you used? I have another tassel project I've been putting off. :wondering

This is defintely disturbing news and very annoying! They need to provide extra tassels, its not that big of a deal! I don't care about that patch of leather they give me, its USELESS!

I thought the same thing!! I saw the patch of leather and was like, ummm okay... but they totally should just pop in a few extra tassels!

Okay ... so some history here ... the splitting tassels has been happened WAAAAAY before '08!! This is the reason why Balenciaga used to provide an extra pair when you purchased the bag. The worst years (IMO) for the splitting tassels was '06 because that wasn't the best year for Balenciaga leather (definitely on the thinner side). Now, that's not to say that I go ballistic with split tassels; I have plenty of older bags that I just don't mess with and frankly, the split tassels really don't bug me that much (if anything, I think it's kind of cool).

What bugs me with the splitting now, is that Balenciaga isn't providing the extra pair anymore because "they are made so much better now" (their words - not mine!). BS ... if they are so much better, then why are they splitting again!?!? If this going to happen, they we shouldn't have to PAY for extra tassels and/or shouldn't be given such a hard time about getting another pair!!

Can you by any chance post some pictures of your split tassels?

I've used rubber cement and it works well. The tassels don't get stiff. You do have to put enough though or they will just split again.

^^^

Thank you..damaris77! I've used some kind of leather glue, and it wasn't awful, but not as flexible as the original tassels.

Rubber Cement sounds good. Also, I like that it is a safe way to go. If worse comes to worse, I can peel it off again! :p

Actually, I think the trouble's not really going away. Almost every bag of mine are ok but the Granny Twiggy. The tassle already split when I received it from Bal. I can't believe they sent me a defect one, but it's the last one that I could find during that time and that since I live oversea, it'll be more than trouble for me to send it back. So, I just live with it. Of course, I never buy anything from that shop again. The tassles're quite thick and the bag doesn't look used, still they split like crazy. I think the glue they use's just inferior and defect.
Now, I wish if I can only find a good glue that can stick them together and still make them as bendable as the good ones.

vink if you check what I did (see link in post before yours), there are pics of how I glued the tassels. I used rubber cement and the tassels are super flexible. The tassels are still stuck together after 1 month.

Ladies,

I just received my City Seigle yesterday ( It's gorgeous) but I noticed that the tassles attached to the mirror is really thin and will split anytime with further usage.

So, I have decided to purchase additional tassles and I just sent am email to Bal, UK to enquire.

Alternatively , can someone recommend a good glue to strenghten the tassles before they split?

I purchased a black city bag from Neiman Marcus and the SA said if I have any split
tassels they will replace them free of charge. So if any of you bought from Neimans check there and they can order tassels as long as it's a current color or black which they can order with an approx. wait time of 4 weeks.

Well .. there you go; Neiman Marcus is known for their customer service ... KUDOS to them for doing this!!! However, I'm not sure how they are going to do this other than asking Balenciaga to provide them and I know Balenciaga isn't providing extra tassels to Barneys (the S/A told me as such). Interesting ...
