Tacky totes

I always like to be appropriate as possible. Sometimes it isn't. If I've got it together I'm happy but if I can't, I convince myself to not give a damn. Fashion is made by rule-breakers.
This.

We're subscribers to one of the bigger theatres in town (and we're easily the youngest by 35+ years too). I do like dressing up for the theatre and we usually do dinner before the show. That said, if there's a chance it will rain between dinner and the show, I grab a bag big enough to hold a small umbrella. Because while flat boots and a larger shoulder bag aren't "formal," neither is arriving at the theater with wet hair looking like a hot mess.

I can’t imagine you ever being anything but devastatingly stylish. :smile:Now its not our fault if sometimes other people dress badly... Happy Christmas dear PT!

Do you ever carry totes in the evening (after 6pm)?
Yes, if I've come straight after class or work, I carry whatever I was carrying to school or work that day. I don't carry extra clutches just in case I go out after work hours. And if I head home for a quick purse change, it's unlikely I'll leave home again.

But lately, my bag has been a MG bucket bag so it's neither here nor there size-wise. I always believe overall look, and how you carry yourself, beats "fashion rules".

Have you noticed others doing this?
Yes. Do I judge? Just a bit. I sometimes wonder if that bag might be their only designer piece and it's a special date night so they wanted to dress up with that one item. But, usually I'm busy eyeing my date and our food/drinks, so unless it's exceptionally oversized and mismatched with their outfit's formality (think NF with an LBD and sky high heels), I don't pay much attention.

Do you, like me, plan ahead and try not to? Am I crazy for doing this?
Nope, drinks are usually spontaneous and I'm usually terrible about planning for anything. And maaaaaybe a little bit? I don't know, this isn't something I obsess about.

ETA: I sometimes worry with venues that have narrower walkways between tables or really crowded bars that a massive tote on someone's shoulder is about to knock a drink into someone else's lap.

I've been to dinner at very nice michelin places and to the theatre with large totes, especially if I go after work. I'd sometimes go to a workout class or something in between and my tote will have my gym bag in it too, and since London's West End is near Chinatown and the Japan Centre and Fortnums and things, sometimes I'll pick up some stuff before, like jam or instant noodles . I don't think it's an issue, particularly with the theatre, as there's usually lots of tourists anyway with little backpacks etc. I never thought twice about it, and I assume a lot of tote-totin' folks there have also been out and about and busy.

If I have time in between of course I'd love to change and wear nice clothes and carry a little fancy bag, but that's not always possible. At the end of the day the theatre to me is going to see a show and is pretty casual, and a dinner even at a nice place is basically dinner. I mean, I'm guaranteed to dress up if it's a weekend, or if it's a special occasion to me like my birthday or anniversary, or something else I was able to plan for so I have the time to dress up for it.

Eta: some venues are super unconducive for large bags, but you can almost always check in your stuff in the cloakroom!

I always stay ready, so I don't have to get ready. Even casual, going to Costco, Walmart, etc.... fitted jeans with a fitted Broadway Tee Shirt with great accessories, and important jewelry. If I know that I am going out, I really put it together. Also, tailoring is the key. Confidence reigns supreme in any and all situations. I've been to events that I didn't realize that everyone would be bringing their 'A-Game' and I show up in fitted jeans, a fitted Broadway Tee Shirt from one of the shows I attended, a Gucci belt, Gucci loafers, sometimes Gucci sock or no socks at all, and my luxury jewelry, and get way too many compliments over guys that try be the best dressed person in the event. The best dressed person is the one that's most confident in themselves.
