I’ve noticed a lot of women lately carrying medium-large totes (i.e. Neverfull, MK jetsetter, etc.) in the evening. I strongly associate that size and shape of bag with a work bag, etc. and I always find it strange to see women carrying a Neverfull at a restaurant in the evening, for example. I feel so strongly about this that I will plan ahead if I’m planning on meeting up for after work dinner/drinks and carry a smaller purse/clutch in my larger tote and switch; use a smaller satchel or shoulder bag (not a tote) that day for work; or utilize the detachable pouch that came with my Mansur Gavriel tote. It just strikes me as somewhat of a fashion faux pas to wear a large tote like that to dinner or to a theater performance, other evening event, etc.

Let’s talk about it: do you ever carry totes in the evening (after 6pm?) Have you noticed others doing this?Do you, like me, plan ahead and try not to? Am I crazy for doing this? What do you think about it?

I’d rather see women dressed nicely carrying a tote to the theatre than showing up in jeans with an “evening” bag which happens all the time. Also see super casual outfits in nice restaurants at dinner ( like sweats people) and I’d prefer not to see that either but honestly it’s their life & none of my business. If a dress code isn’t enforced, I’m not the fashion police.

Some people probably have good reasons for needing/having the larger bag at that moment and I’m not going to judge them because it’s after 6pm...

I agree.

To me, a tote is not an evening bag, no matter how designer it is. Do people really take totes to a theater these days? :whut:

I'd never take anything other than a WOC or a clutch or, if I really, really need too, a mini shoulder bag to an event like that.
But what if you want to smuggle food in? I'm not paying 12.99 for popcorn!
ETA I think I'm talking about a different kind of theatre...

Yeah, I was talking about an actual one with the stage and everything, but I don't think the same rules would apply to the movies - it's definitely a very casual place and yes, those prices are insane!

Loool! Yes. 100% perfect for smuggling things into all sorts of places and I'll admit I do it too :P. I wouldn't wear a neverfull to the opera house personally, but in London West End, I'll often see people dressed casually/smart casual as probably just come after work with friends etc. to watch plays/musicals. I'd probably (and I think have done) worn tote type bags there.

Noticed that lots of folk in 20s/30s don't tend to dress up like the older ladies and gents whose outfits I'll always admire at opera and places like that. Seems like it's dying gradually which is sad in my opinion

For me it's more about the event than time of day.

For example, an extremely casual 4th of July event (picnic, and sitting on a blanket watching fireworks) could easily start at 6pm or later, and I think a tote would be very appropriate. Same for attending a child or teen's sporting event in the evening - or a professional sporting event in the evening. But a matinee ballet or afternoon wedding I wouldn't think a tote appropriate.

I love totes and on a daily basis literally (& sadly) can’t use anything else as I always carry too much stuff :P (and don’t want to change that ).. I do have plenty of smaller bags, but I always end up carrying a second bag / tote in my hand on such days

However, for concerts or theatre I use smaller evening bags (and hate it  ).

As regards other people, I couldn’t care less what they are wearing, as long as they are decent and not endangering me by any means

I'm not really a tote person, but "no totes after 6pm" seems a little harsh, I think it's fine and expected for everyday dinner out or a casual get together. Some people don't change their purse that often so they are just going to bring what is already packed. I do think a big tote would be odd for a formal event, unless there is some reason they need to carry many things. There might also be the issue of not having or using their car that day, if you Uber or use public transportation you wouldn't have a car to leave things in.

I don't think the OP is judging anyone, but we all see style choices (or lack thereof) everyday, and this forum is a place where we can share our opinions about them. I agree that a smaller bag generally looks better and more polished for an evening event than a tote, but this thread brings to mind that I often see the opposite end of the spectrum too--an overly formal super-sparkly or beaded bag for a nice dinner on a weekday, for example. Both bother me, but the tote bothers me less. Overall, the idea of "dressing for the occasion" may be passé to some, but I'm still a believer in it, and in my personal opinion, the women who usually look best from a style perspective are the ones who nail it despite their very busy lives. And yes, some minimal planning, such as keeping a WOC or small bag at the office for unanticipated evenings out, goes a long way.
