To my knowledge, margins are not public information. This was in reference to Allanrvj's post that leathergoods may not account for as much of business as we are led to believe, but in fact they are the largest of the 14 categories of merchandise by far.

But my point is that the portion of revenue that can be attributed to leather goods does not equate with how much "business" they are responsible for.

I don't think those of us who purchase H goods care much about their profit margin. We assume it's massive, but we like what they do and want very much for them to stay in business. If huge profit margins keeps them doing what they do well, then so be it.

profit margins. ah yes!

but I was not talking about the earnings, but the volume of inventory of the stores since mafoofan wondered if...

Hermes leather good production is probably a lot more factory/assembly-line oriented and less workshop-like than many would like to believe. It must be in order to service their hundreds of retail points.

and then I said that leather goods don't account for the greatest amount of inventory. What I was trying to say is that their store set-up isn't like most purveyors of luxurious leather goods, like Louis Vuitton or Bottega Veneta, where there are bags and SLGs everywhere inside, no matter how big or small the store is.

So it's not that difficult for Hermès to supply handcrafted leather goods to it's <300 stores if they are only selling a few, per store, with high profit margins for each.

So, I've just read *mostly* this whole thread. (I skipped from 25-35 but mostly read the whole thing.)

First of all, Mr. Foo--Happy Birthday! What a great idea to celebrate with a wallet and choosing the color of money seems lucky, indeed. Its unfortunate to say the least that what you wanted wasn't available, but not surprising.

Mostly SA's are pretty good, but it does seem to be a large research project to see what is available in what leather color and/or/if it can be made or ordered. I find it is the one place where I shop where one cannot purchase the current season's items without having to wait for them to be "brought in." Colorways are often not available in scarves--they've changed the rules now such that things less than a certain dollar amount can't be brought in -- one has to purchase them--and in general the whole thing is a horrible, inventory nightmare.

If you want a specific Hermes thing, its often tough to get it when you want it and they make so many things, that it is hard for SA's to remember it all (though I think they should make the effort to).

A note on "bespoke" and Hermes:

What occurs to me, and I mean no harm--is that if one truly wants a bespoke item, why go to Hermes at all? Why not go to some other leather worker who is carefully French Leather Apprentice school trained and can make a truly bespoke wallet?

I love my Hermes bags. Adore them. But when I wanted a weird shaped wallet modeled on something I'd gotten as a giveaway that just happened to be a perfect size--I found someone who could make it by hand, in the leather I wanted. I had to wait about eight months, but I've had it for six years and its going strong.

Bespoke to me, means bespoke--well beyond selecting a leather.

Perhaps that is another item for another day--and I truly mean no offense. Like I said, I love my Hermes, but when I wanted something truly bespoke in a small leather good, I felt that I had to look beyond Hermes.

YMMV.

I didn't want to go the bespoke route because I wasn't looking for anything particularly special or unique. I've heard of a few, very well-reputed Hermes-trained artisans, but they're largely in Europe. April in Paris is in San Francisco, but I'm not a fan of their standard leathers or wallet designs. I'm sure they could customize a wallet to my liking, but I just don't want to go through the hassle when a well-executed off-the-rack design is all I need.

finally i found a forum where i belong.

Welcome home, Hermes Man.

So, are you buying those Hermes paper bags that Spoo posted on eBay?

When dealing with Hermes SA find one you like. My first purchase I wasn't thrilled with SA. Next time different SA she honestly will ask me how my child is very nice very helpful. Nothing worse than when people work in high end retail and act snotty yuck....Tiffany is the worst with that.

In case any of you are interested, I picked up the wallet yesterday. Short review and pictures below:
