ID sounds a lot like my father-in-law. Zzzzzzzzzz.... Haha
The same FIL who said in all seriousness that he's "too rich to make his own salad" and likes to make spreadsheets outlining his net worth and calls over everyone to have a look. *major snore*
My FIL and I are NOT getting along... Like, ever. Haha

I can speak only for myself, but I took offense not at the criticisms of Hermès (I feel no need to explain or defend my buying choices to strangers) but by the fact that some posters chose to enter a new forum and immediately insult its members, both individually and en masse; mock the subject of the forum (if you have no particular liking for the brand, why post here at all?); and both ridicule and flout forum conventions (commonly-used abbreviations, usual post lengths, etc.). That is simply obnoxious behavior. And that offended me. But many of the posts were hilarious. Mostly unintentionally.

Mindi, the fact is that a tpfer went to their forum first, which led to them coming here. Also, the fact is that a tpfer made a thread here about one of their members. It is only fair that they come here to clarify. Given the facts, I think what you said is not reasonable.

Just to inform myself, did the tPFer who went to their forum treat it with the same disrespect? And if he/she did, does that excuse the repetition of bad behavior? Please note that I did not object to their "coming here" in and of itself, nor to their "coming here to clarify." I do object to SOME of them coming here and being obnoxious. I respectfully stand by my comments.

I have been reading lots of threads in their forum and enjoyed many of the posts but it is a different flavor than our forum and I would guess they follow different rules than we have here. They can post at a higher level of sarcasm, swearing, and going off topic in threads IMO is common (and often very humorous). I have read a couple posts the SF members who have become new members on this forum have made that IMO are going farther than what I have seen allowed to be posted here in the past. I am a bit confused why they are allowed to do it,,,,,,here because I sure don't feel comfortable with our rules posting back at the same level (if I wanted to go there).

sf people weren't happy with a tPFer who posted "Maybe you are just not "worthy," whoever you are." many came here angry at pretentiousness.

that said, you are a wonderful bunch. love how you support each other's posts. use a wider range of smilies. the jokes mild and lovely. how many posts have little substance other than to thank and support others.

this is a wonderful place.

Thank you, EH. This definitely explains some things. I would still say it is appropriate to at least TRY to familiarize oneself with a specific forum's rules, customs, and tone before posting. At least, before posting a lot. An awful lot. And I do feel that different flavor or not, unkindness, pomposity, and verbosity are recognizable whether chocolate or vanilla. And Merry Christmas, EH!

ETA: And yup, I think this should apply to members of our forum going elsewhere, as well as to members of another forum coming here.

You know...maybe the barenia thongs and Hermes knee pads have come to life and are haunting our Christmas pasts...

I for one like their "spice"-sometimes-"nice" but it's a-ok if others might not...

I've been reading this thread for the past 2 days and I guess I'm one of the few that doesn't find ID's posts offensive but intelligent. But that's just me.

ID - Even though I buy into the whole luxury handbag thing (I just recently bought my first Birkin), I agree with A LOT, if not with everything, of what you said ... And yes I'm a woman. Just saying, you've got atleast one fan :ghi5:

I do have to say though, we get obnoxious posters here now and then anyway. It can't be helped, but that's the joy and unexpected spark it adds to the forum sometimes. :D

As for members of the other forum coming here and being obnoxious (and/or strutting other forms of man-ly behaviour :D)... ...it all comes down to men defending their turf. it's in their cavemen genes. :D

btw all this talk of pompous and arrogance and style reminded me of this. I can't help it. :D

Well I don't know if this reveals how pathetic I am to have read this entire thread on Christmas Eve or my fantastic sense of humor, but I've appreciated the entertainment much more than watching A Christmas Story again.

So THANK YOU to all who contributed.

(I just can't leave you guys alone for a minute!)

Aw, no, IL! The writing for A Christmas Story is far wittier and more humorous than anything said here, and we don't get lectured on the manufacturing, marketing, and hideous markup of the Red Rider BB gun. Nor do we have to hear about the incompetent and ignorant SA who refused to sell Ralphie's dad the BB gun unless he also bought the holster, cowboy hat, and a box of ammo :p
