I don't carry straw bags much but honestly there are SO MANY AWESOME straw bags at my local thrift shops! Vintage ones especially...very well made and truly pretty.

speaking of thrift shop, here's a Brighton I found for $18. I know it's not what you are asking about in your OP, and I do see more of the true straw totes with frayed edges, etc at thrift shops that aren't designer labeled.

Hi!

Does anyone have a clue where to find the kind of straw bag (with "freyed top") that used to be seen in all the tropical photos in the magazines in the seventies (and eighties too, I believe...)? They were large totes in thin natural straw of quite light colour and had an unfinished look (because of the unfinished braiding resulting in straws that stood out from the top edge of the tote). This is the best way I can describe it, I think. I hope you know what I mean and that you can give me some tips on how to get one!

Kind regards
C
noticed a straw bag in MK window nyc today

yes that is very nice! we need modelling shots...;)
this is my favourite straw basket bag so far... from CATH KIDSTON , its a few years old and sadly she doesnt do this design any more. It is lined in cotton and comes with a little purse. I am always on the look out for good basket bags, (prefer no brand ones) so please share your favourites... I am also curious as why so little interest in basket bags. Do most of you prefer leather or canvas? I find basketware so fresh and perfect for warm weather...

I have one of these lovely Cath Kidston Bags with the green ditsy flower print inside. Absolutely love it
There are some like this on ebay at the moment for sale.

I don't really buy designer straw bags ;) i found a really cute one for only 25 euros which I will buy soon. :)

exactly! As another member said - most designers tend to overwork the straw, adding too much frou frou - destroying the simplicity of the bag! The whole point of the straw bag is that it looks fresh and youthful - a sort of ultimate 'less is more' approach, perfect with jeans and a pristine white t-shirt, or a silk flowery chiffon dress. LOVE IT!

Found a straw bag in a charity shop last week. Cost me all of 25 Swedish kronor (about 2 pounds or 3.33 dollars)... :giggles: When I (finally) get a mobile phone with a camera I will insert a picture if you are interrested! Still no sign of the ones I was asking about, though...

Oh! If you were to see one of the ones I really want (I have posted links to hats similar to them), please give me a shout and maybe there would be something to do about it... Like I wrote before, no-name is very allright with me when it comes to straw bags. Some of the designer ones look like they are trying to hard and they are waaaay to expensive. I buy most of my clothes and bags second hand (on ebay etc) to help the environment and to be able to wear clothes I like that I might not be able to afford otherwise.

I know that you can buy really lovely straw bags in France and they are often very cheap too so I quite envy you being able to pick and choose. (Appartently they have a lot of good ones in the Caribbean as well but I have never been there myself.) I would love to go on a tour of the French country side photographing the landscape and visiting small antique shops and markets. Does it sound ridiculously idyllic? A couple of years ago I discovered that I am gluten intolerant and I don't drink alcohol anymore so there would be no possibility of eating any baguettes, pain au chocolat or drinking wine so I guess I would splurge on small antiques and straw bags instead:smile1:!

I'll keep an eye out and snap photos for you to see if something looks good!!
