I bought one of these http://www.inreda.com/showProductsDetail.asp?meta=Str%E5v%E4ska+naturf%E4rgad+med+fl%E4tat+l%E4derhandtag%2C+Tine+K+Home&pID=15312&cID=24&agrID=(The medium sized one, actually called Large) to wear and use until I find one of the ones I described earlier. As a child I really loved the wonderful pictures of tropical beaches and in the pictures there sometimes was one of "those straw bags". Maybe I have described them wrongly or maybe am I the only one who totally fell in love with them and kept them on my wish list for 35 years...

yes that is very nice! we need modelling shots...;)
this is my favourite straw basket bag so far... from CATH KIDSTON , its a few years old and sadly she doesnt do this design any more. It is lined in cotton and comes with a little purse. I am always on the look out for good basket bags, (prefer no brand ones) so please share your favourites... I am also curious as why so little interest in basket bags. Do most of you prefer leather or canvas? I find basketware so fresh and perfect for warm weather...

Oh, that was a nice bag as well! I find that the brands sometimes overwork the straw bags and the natural feeling gets lost among the golddetails and other things so "no name" is better for me too. The hat in the background of your pictures was really cute as well.
I have found straw hats that looks a bit like the bag I am searching for, like this one e g http://http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-BEACH-COMBER-HAWAIIAN-HAT-straw-head-hats-hair-NEW-/230573709595?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item35af43991b#ht_2331wt_952 (the bag was lighter in colour though). Maybe this will give someone a flashback to the seventies? I have found that they are sold on "party supply pages". In Sweden the luau culture is quite rare, not to say non existant, so for me it does not give me those connotations but for others it might. Strangely enough it says somewhere that the hat is "Jamaican style" but are sold for Hawaiian luaus...
I really like the low straw bag that someone recommended here as well (submitted a picture). Really elegant and natural and practical!

so true! Its amazing how few people in this forum seem to have the confidence to go for the 'no brand' look! Almost like we need the endorsement of the label. Everyone talks about how they hate logos but when it comes down to it most people are scared to make their own decision. Can you post a photo of the hat as your link doesnt work on my mac...;)

That's really attractive. I agree that straw bags are the sign of summer and don't need any particular "brand" look to be chic and fun.

This Rebecca Minkoff Fairytale clutch is very cute too, but the straw is super fragile. Any wrong move and it breaks!! But it's great for summer, though. The Neon trim is very pretty and the shape is just cute! It's expensive for straw but worth it if you want a cute clutch for summertime.

I like straw bags but I refuse to pay anymore than $20-$30 for them in case it breaks easily. Paying any higher isn't worth it to me. :(

Hi!

Does anyone have a clue where to find the kind of straw bag (with "freyed top") that used to be seen in all the tropical photos in the magazines in the seventies (and eighties too, I believe...)? They were large totes in thin natural straw of quite light colour and had an unfinished look (because of the unfinished braiding resulting in straws that stood out from the top edge of the tote). This is the best way I can describe it, I think. I hope you know what I mean and that you can give me some tips on how to get one!

Kind regards
C

I vaguely remember those bags but I believe they were genuinely frayed from years of usage. Maybe you can find an inexpensive straw bag at a flea market (they also have lots at TJMaxx/TKMaxx by the scarves section) and fray it yourself. I think it would require carefully removing the horizontal strips and letting the vertical strips stick out.

Another suggestion and I haven't looked myself, is to find a "surf" or "beach" website where they sell apparel and accessories. i think you would have a very good chance.

I already saw a frayed straw hat at http://www.e4hats.com/_e/Outback_Ra.../Outback_Raffia_Frayed_Straw_Hats_Natural.htm It is only a frayed hat, not bag, but I am sure you mean this kind of fraying.

Also look under key words "raffia" as well. The closest bag I found is a clutch here: http://www.hatattack.com/DEB407/Raffia+Braid+Frayed+edge+clutch+++with+Chiffon+Pom+Trim.html

ooh can you post a photo? Local craftsmen usually make THE BEST STRAW BAGS....:hbeat::hbeat::hbeat::hbeat:

I will try to at some point, although I'm terrible with pics. One is a huge straw tote with 'Bahamas' and a flamingo family woven onto the front. The other is a little bag for my daughter with hello kitty woven on. And they wove her name on the back.
