Lettres d’Erevan
In 2005, when Jean-Louis Dumas decided to create a special edition of Les Jardins d’Arménie silk scarf to celebrate the fifteenth anniversary of the charity Solidarité protestante France-Arménie, he expressed the desire “to create a lasting bond, fashioned from silk, bright like a rainbow, between these two countries rich in spiritua¬lity and culture.” Ten years have passed, and I am pleased that this bond is being renewed with the sale by advance order of a new scarf named Lettres d’Erevan, designed by Karen Petrossian.
Here, the elegant curves of the Armenian alphabet are freely traced out in an ornamental ABC. Dropped capitals and friezes are drawn in delicate calligraphy and illuminated in the style of ancient manuscripts. In the middle of this writing, under a richly embellished arch, a sage sits meditating beneath a starry sky. In his hands, he holds the tools of knowledge: a quill and an open book.
Karen Petrossian pays homage to Mesrop Mashtots, the inventor of the Armenian alphabet. This erudite and visionary monk from the Middle Ages gave the Armenian people the gift of a preciousmedium that still to this day enables them to communicate their language, civilization and faith across the centuries and beyond borders.
Lettres d’Erevan is also dedicated to the Matenadaran, the large library in Yerevan. A paradise for researchers and historians, the Matenadaran is one of the world’s richest depositaries of manuscripts and documents, and is today widely compared to the great Library of Alexandria. Countless works on history and science from centuries past have been archived and preserved here since its creation, which, according to tradition, dates back to the invention of the Armenian alphabet.
How could one not be moved by the admirable vitality of a people and culture that have endured so much ? I am delighted that the profits generated by the sale of these scarves will allow the Solidarité protestante France-Arménie association to continue its action with the Armenian people.
Pierre-Alexis Dumas
Artistic director of Hermès
For the second time, Hermès is offering its support to the Solidarité protestante France-Arménie (SPFA), a French charity of volunteers serving Armenia and its population in need. Ten years after Les
Jardins d’Arménie, Hermès is producing a limited-edition silk scarf named Lettres d’Erevan, designed by artist Karen Petrossian. The profits generated from its sale by advance order will go towards the humanitarian and cultural action undertaken by the SPFA.
The SPFA, a charity founded in 1990 in Paris by the pastor Samuel Sahagian in the aftermath of the 1988 earthquake in the Spitak region, works with numerous volunteers to offer an extremely varied programme of action in Armenia: providing towns and villages with drinking water, improving hospital equipment, creating a community restaurant for the poor, organising French language clubs for students, a summer school, sponsoring children, and more. Twice a year, the association also organises discovery and solidarity holidays which help to raise awareness of the country and its inhabitants.
In choosing an ABC theme for the Lettres d’Erevan scarf, which reproduces the Armenian alphabet invented by the monk Mesrop Mashtots in 405, Karen Petrossian wanted to “pay tribute to an eminent Armenian figure who succeeded in uniting his people through their language and the Christian faith” and enabled them “to join the great civilisations of the written word.”
On behalf of the SPFA, I would like to extend our sincere thanks to Hermès and designer Karen Petrossian for choosing the theme of the Armenian alphabet, which is a source of identity, knowledge and culture for this beautiful country. It is also a symbol of the friendship between the French and Armenian people, and an extraordinary gift celebrating the 25th anniversary of the SPFA. We are extremely grateful for the manifestation of support and encouragement which this artistic work represents. We hope that it will extend the circle of friends and supporters of our humanitarian work which continues to be as urgent and essential as ever.

I hope someone will order this and take a picture of the monk at the bottom of the scarf so we can see it!
I inquired about the scarf via email with the organization and received no response.
Although I want the scarf badly, I'm a little uncomfortable about making a wire bank transfer from the United States.
If I don't hear from them by the beginning of November, I'll have to pass on this special scarf.

I must have ESP. Just after I posted, I checked my email and the organization responded.

I felt the same way donneybaby. Please share how they responded and if a charge card could be used instead. TIA

They'll only accept cheque or wire transfer, so I'll probably do a wire transfer in a couple of weeks (before the Nov. 31 deadline).
SPFA is such a well-respected organization and being that there was actually an event to unveil the scarves, I'm not worried about any kind of scam. And they did just respond to my email, addressing some of my concerns.
I just want to make sure that when I place the order, I lock in the exchange rate, being that I'm going from U.S. dollars to euros.
SPFA says to avoid any confusion, just include my receipt from the bank transfer when I email them a scan of my order form.
That's sounds reasonable to me.
